What food gives you an energy boost??

Have you found any food or meal that gives a energy boost when your draggin major butt?? I heard flax seed is an energy food, is that right??

I eat my trusty old oatmeal with a scoop of whey protein, for an energy boost. Always seems to help :)

The only thing that gives me a boost is coffee!
But if you like flax seeds, Nature's Path has some really good cereals with flax seeds.

Aside from coffee, which is more of a drug, or tea or some other caffeinated substance, I get energy from carrot juice. It's odd, but it always works! Next best is a juicy fruit like peach, cantaloupe or mango.

Being hypoglycemic, I have to watch what gives me energy, as opposed to what makes me---jittery/then tired. Juice alone can do that, as can anything sweet. I usually get more energy when I eat some protein and some good carb together. I don't get the SWOOSH---and then the SLUMP.

Steel cut oats. You can find them in the health food section of Kroger. It takes a while to cook them, but so good. Very substantial and really sticks with you and gives you lots of steady engery. Also, if I am going to attend a big meeting that day, I have a big bowl because I truly believe oats are "brain food". My husband always ate a big bowl before a test when he was getting his masters degree.

How did you know that you were hypoglycemic? I get jittery and then super tired after I eat or drink something really sweet or if I drink reg soda. I just recently had bloodwork done (my doctor left the area so I had to get a new one and she wanted cholesteral tested due to family history of heart disease) and my glucose checked. It was a fasting test so I hadn't had anything to eat and my glucose was 81 and the doctor said that was fine. When I get jittery my legs also feel unstable and shakey. Any ideas??
Thanks,
Kimbra

Those steel cut oats are they high in protein?? What is the difference between these and quaker oats..you've sparred my interest!! I too think I have a blood sugar problem, when I dont eat for a period of time I get lightheaded, and I sweat and become disoriontated

I bonk a lot(that lightheaded, jittery but jello legs feeling), and my bloodwork is always fine. I really need to watch my sugar/simple carb intake, especially in the mornings. If I eat a high carb breakfast with little or no protien I will surely bonk about an hour later. If I manage what I eat in the motnings I usually do fine.

Kimbra,
You can get reactive hypoglycemia even if you have a normal blood glucose. Some foods will make your blood sugar spike but then dramatically fall. For me if I ate fruit in the morning, I would have that terrible crash with the jitters etc. Terrible and scarey feeling but it has been awhile since I know how to avoid it.

As far an an energy boost - nuts or Snapple a Day Lo Carb drink (good balance of protein and fiber w/o much sugar).

Kimbra---what they all said about having a normal BS and sometimes still having hypoglycemic reactions (symptoms) is true. Mine is very often normal on testing. The way I found out is years ago, when I worked in a doctor's office, I was always running out of gas, getting faint and jittery and fuzzy headed a couple of hours after the lunch hour---especially if I ate a very high carb-only lunch. Like grabbing a sweet granola bar. So---one day when it happened big time (everything was getting black while I was taking history on a patient) I went down a picked my finger and tested myself (lucky to work at an office)---my BS was 51. So--I knew. I have never had 'treatment' for this, I just know that if I have carb-with-no-protein, or straight sweets, and no protein with it, I am going to feel like crap within a 1/2 hr.

So, I eat as clean as possible, sort of the way Cathe says to. I can eat things like they say above, like oatmeal because they are higher glycemic (whole foods) and i often will have milk or soy milk with it for protein.
