What do your DH's do to work out?

My husband has type 2 diabetes at 36 years old. He is not overweight but he is sedentary. I want to get him a DVD that he would like to work out to. I know...I know... but he won't do Cathe I have tried. Does anyone have David Kirsch's workouts? I just need to get him started on someone he will like doing and then maybe he will try a Cathe workout or two.

My DH runs, cycles and works out with weights at the police department gym (which he is in charge of so he gets to order the best equipment!).

I don't think my DH would ever do a DVD workout. :)

Nrich,

I've tried to do that to my husband once, but the DVD just sits there. Ask him first if he wants to sit around all the time, or maybe get some exercise in. If he does, then ask him what he might be interrested in. He may just want to walk or jog as my husband does, or perhaps be interrested in a DVD of sorts. If the later, then maybe you both can pick something out together that he might like. It's really personal preference.

Good luck, you are great to want the best for him.

Do you have a treadmill? It's a huge investment I know, but one of my reasons for buying one about 5 years ago was to get hubby to do SOMETHING ANYTHING, because he's a couch potato. I then told him how much fun it was when he was treading while I was Cathe-ing, that I loved hanging out with him during that time. He only does a half hour of walking a day, but compared to nothing, which was his previous situation, that's pretty good. When I'm not working out at the same time he's treading, he can watch BOND, JAMES BOND movies, or reruns of 24, or whatever, and he's happy.

If your hub wants to do weight work you might consider the original Ripped, it's pretty straightforward, good for beginners with all the form techniques, and I THINK it would appeal to guys. My husband likes to ogle Jari when I do that workout, although he's not yet picked up a dumbbell...

The way I got my husband (who's 37) to start exercising is by buying him a bike to ride outside. He's not into DVD's or the treadmill. It worked! We live in CT and our streets are full of hills so he's able to get his heartrate up by going up the hill and once in a while he gets a little break going down. You have to ask him what he enjoys doing, then go from there. Now I'm working on getting him into lifting weights! Good luck! I hope others will be able to give you some other ideas.

He owns weights and weight bench and an elliptical that get used once in a while. I was hoping once he got his sugar under control he would feel better... not yet though. I think when he does weights he simply doesn't challenge himself. I wouldn't either if I didn't have Cathe telling me how many reps and when I should feel the BURN.

No I don't expect him to try step. I don't want to imasculate him or anything.

My dh will go and run 15 miles in an hour on the eliptical most days . Then he lifts. He was a jock in high school so he does his own thing. He won't do tapes.
Oh, the best part is he will work out then come up and covered in sweat make a gin and grapefruit. Defeats the purpose.
So i don't know what to tell you.

nrich, my SO is very sedentary too, he is 34 and he is a C5 quadrapelegic so there is not much he can do. I do physical threapy with him, range of motion stuff and stretches. What he really wants to do is get an indoor pool built onto the back of the house so he can do more. Sorry not much help, I guess see what he is interested in and what he is willing to try. Good luck.:)

My DH has been a runner since cross country in high school. Unfortunatley, his knees won't stand the pounding anymore, so he uses my step and watches a movie or TV show. His favorite is to watch a couple of his beloved Seinfeld episodes. He used to wear a HRM until he figured out how hard he has to work. He also lifts weights in the basement while listening to a CD. I get bored in the basement and would much rather workout with Cathe and the crew. I don't think he would ever workout to a DVD.

My DH is very social so the gym is for him. He likes to talk to different people, etc. And yeah, he gets a workout in as well.

Now, if you think your DH would do better with a video, have you considered Power 90 with Tony Horton (of P90X fame)? It's 4 cardio and sculpting videos that are about 1/2 an hour each with a program that he can simply follow.

Seriously, though, it may help to get him started by taking a short walk with him daily. Unless he's motivated to do something, he won't (we all know that). If you encourage him to walk, he'll start to feel the benefits. It's tough to workout when we're not feeling 100%.

Off topic but... Do we have enough Buffett fans out there or what? I think I make 3 on this post. Went and saw him on 8/12 in Mansfield, MA. 19th row. I still have post Jimmy depression. I have seen him there 8 times and once at Fenway.

My DH cycles a lot in the summer. In the winter he does spinning at the rec center and lifts weights there too. There is no way that I would get him to do a DVD workout. Though he did try Core Max 2 once and was sore for days }( . IMO, guys have the most success with sports or some activity outside. Does he have a sport he would like to get back into? How about walking after dinner to get him moving?

Oh, I just can't help it - he chases women!

Actually, he's not my DH, he's my SO, or now my SOB! I'll stop now.

My DH plays Xbox. Great for finger and hand dexterity. ;)

I think that it is great that you are wanting and trying to get your DH to do something, but does he WANT to? I have found that when I, and other wives that I know, try to "help" our husbands - even if we are right and the doctor recommends it - it does no good because DH doesn't care or want to change and the result is usually closed ears and dug in heels. (I want you to know that I am in the same boat as you, only my DH IS overweight - he has high bp, cholesterol, and both his parents have type 2 diabetes, his dad had a heart attack and a triple bypass... DH is at such high risk I have to make myself not think about it... But he knows where he is now, he knows the risks he is facing, as much as I hate it I can't do a thing about it, it has to be his decision)

You could ask him what activity he likes to do best - for my husband it is basketball - and then offer to play a game with him or offer to let him have the evening free so that he and his friends can get together and do something. He doesn't have to do a Cathe workout - just because you like it doesn't mean he will, and his goal may never be to be as fit as you aspire to be - that's okay. Honestly, when my DH comes home from a long and exhausting day at work, the first thing he wants to do is relax and let his mind go - the last thing he thinks about is doing something else that would exert any more energy from him or to be "pushed" to, so we try to play games or take the kids on trails on the weekends - two days of activity is 200% better than none. I hope that helps some...

>My DH plays Xbox. Great for finger and hand dexterity.

Lol, same here, my SO plays Xbox 360, PS2 and Gamecube... it keeps him busy.:)

Yup, same here! PS2 seems to be one of the main workouts for mine. Oh, but most of the time it's the 12 oz curls. LOL!
I wish that he was more into working out, but he's just not.

Hi,

What about a Tony Horton Power 90 workout? I don't have them
myself. My boyfriend recently has started using weights at home
and asked me to help him...finally he has shown interest.
He has done Cathe's PUB and liked it.

Last night he did the Quick Fix ball workouts with Kellie Roberts.
There are 3 10 minute workouts on the ball. The balance challenge is
good for him too. Maybe your DH would like Ripped to the Core or
something from the Ripped or Slim Series. There are men participants in both of these workouts so maybe he could relate to that. Not sure what age your DH is but my boyfriend is 52 and had not ever used weights so he is finding that stretching workouts are so VERY important too. Slim & Limber, Cool it Off are both good ones.

We bike to work together. :D A beautiful route, along a river.

My DH is not interested in videos at all either, but has lately said that he would like to lift weights at home using the hand weights I have and an exercise ball.

You might have some luck interesting him in team sports... maybe check with the parks and recreation office in your area to see what's available. There are also lots of good little workout plans in Men's Health or Outside magazines.

The good thing is I haven't pushed him. I just tell him (only when he complains) that he needs to find something he likes to do and he will stick with it. He has a bike, sold the treadmill 2 years ago, bought an elliptical. I just thought if I bought a DVD that was more calisthenics and weights he would do it. He did do some Abs of steel in the past.

I had a bad back and someone suggested exercising again (like I used to) what a difference. So for me it's to prevent pain.

DH was getting on the treadmill for a while but stopped when we moved. Now he gets his exercise from working around the yard and house. I wish he would do a bit more but right now I know he's doing the best he can. I figure I will continue to set an example and keep fitness a household topic, and he'll get back to it eventually.
