What do you think? Birthday idea

Okay, my DD turns 10 next month (I have no idea how that happened - she was JUST a baby!!!).

I've been trying to figure out what to get her and I don't want to get her more "stuff". So I thought maybe I'd take her to Niagara Falls, NY for a weekend, stay in a hotel with an indoor pool, go out for dinner and breakfast, maybe hit the Outlet Mall and definitely Target (she loves shopping). Sort of a girls' weekend away.

What do you all think?

RE: What do you think? Birthday idea.

Shelley, I think that's a terrific idea. Sounds like a blast and it will give her a wonderful memory rather than just another collection of things. ;-)

RE: What do you think? Birthday idea.

I think that sounds wonderful!! She'll always remember it, too, unlike material goods that she'll love for a time before moving on to the next "thing".

RE: What do you think? Birthday idea.

I think it's an awesome idea! I wish I could have done that with my mom. I do remember some great days with my mom, though, when we would just have fun girls' days outs shopping or seeing movies together. We are still close, so it must have worked well.

Lainie - I remember days like that with my mom too, and we were also very close. When we lived in London we would do lunch, the theatre and shopping and I have extremely fond memories of those days.

Cuz really, it's all about food and shopping, right?

RE: What do you think? Birthday idea.

Fantastic idea!! Can I come? At 10, I would have LOVED staying in a hotel with a pool. The shopping would have been a bonus. I guess I'm still a 10 year old at heart because it sounds like fun.

RE: What do you think? Birthday idea.

Wow, Shelley, that sounds so perfect! I have all boys, and doing something like that would be different for me since they don't like the whole shopping thing. If I had a daughter I would do it!!! I think she will love it! You could even take pics and collect little items from the day that you find ( like maybe leaves from Niagara falls and something from the restaurant, etc.) and make her a scrapbook or something to remember it by... what a nice memory that will be for her!

Shell, what a great idea! Sophie will love it! Take lots of pix to share with us later. You are waaaay too young to have a 10 year old!

I also think it sounds like a fabulous idea. Much better than just 'stuff.'

As someone already said: make sure to take lots of pictures!

Oh good, I'm glad everyone thinks it's a good idea. I think she'll really like it.

All right, I'm off to research Niagara Falls NY hotels with pools:)

Of course it's a great idea!!! Didn't we just do the same thing? .... Well, at least the food and shopping part of it, right? ;) I hope you get parking closer to the falls!

Shelly-

This idea works well. I did it in August with both DD's in NYC and we had a blast. And it really was all about shopping and eating!

OMG - we just did this in August with the whole family (2 dd and 1 ds). The kids (and us) had a great time....they didn't stop talking about it for weeks. This is a great time of year too! Definitely a great idea.

I just took my kids to Niagara Falls this past summer and they loved it! If she's adventurous, be sure to take your DD to Cave of the Winds. You take an elevator down a couple hundred feet and then go out on this open air wooden walkway built right in front of one of the smaller falls (Bridal Veil). Everyone has to wear raincoats because the spray is so wild. There's one part of the walkway called the Hurricane Deck--because that's what it feels like when you stand there. We got absolutely soaked but couldn't stop laughing--it was so much fun! Enjoy yourselves.

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

I doubt we'll actually go to the Falls. We live 40 minutes from them, so we've been many times already. And it will be the end of November, so the spray might be a tad bit chilly:p But we'll see. If she wants to stop there, of course we will.

This will be a birthday long remembered after all the other "stuff" breaks or is outgrown or forgotten! I have done this before and highly recommend it!

Of course, take lots of pics!!

Oh Shelley - that sounds like a wonderful idea! At 10 I would have loved to have done something like that! How cool!

Yup, that's what girls like. But I think you should come to Manhattan instead and take along your friend from NYC. ;) :p

Nance - she's already expressed a desire to go to NYC, so we'll do that in a couple of years. Unless I win the lottery, then we'll be there next week:p

Someone reminded me that we could order ROOM SERVICE for breakfast! Who doesn't love room service?!?!?!?
