What do you think about Pilates? Just Hype?

I have a copy of Windsor Pilates, but I have been doing only the Cathe workouts off Fit TV( till I can buy them). Is Pilates that great, or is it just hype? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for all your support.....It is hard to be the Newbie starting out, but all of you have been a great help!

Winsor may make some false claims about her workouts, but that doesn't mean pilates is all hype. It's a great way to focus on core strength and posture. The leg work targets the small muscles that often get ignored or underworked. Pilates does have to be part of an overall fitness program that includes cardio & unless you're using equipment like the reformer & cadillac, you still need resistance training.

Winsor gets good reviews, just don't believe the fat burning claims. And I'm sure you know you can't look like Daisy Fuentes (a runner by the way) in 8 weeks by exercising 3 times a week for 20 minutes!

There was an article in Glamour magazine a few months back where they compared the weight loss results among three ways to work out: pilates, all cardio, and weight training. They all had the same controlled diet. Participants lost more weight from weight training than from pilates or all cardio due to the longer "afterburn" following weight training.

I've tried Pilates before but never got the hang of it. After having gotten used to Cathe's intensity, Pilates felt like rest. And I felt like I got to work my core more when doing planks on the floor or pikes on a stability ball, as well as got a strength bonus from using my upper body for support. I know that Cathe uses some Pilates moves in her ab workouts, but these are combined with other ab exercises.

I'm aware that there are many success stories associated with Winsor Pilates, so I don't think it's hype. I guess this is proof that if you put your mind and heart to a fitness program, such program will work for you. I believe that a successful fitness program is a combination of many things -- weight training, cardio, nutrition, consistency, attitude, among others -- and not just one single method used over and over again.

I do yoga instead of pilates. Yoga gets to work on my balance, coordination, flexibility, mental state, even physical strength (many of the poses being isometric holds) and is a great compliment to my Cathe workouts. It's really all a matter of choosing what works for you. I tried Pilates and ended up choosing yoga to round out my program.

I like pilates and find it to be a good addition to my fitness routine. I have only done Winsor so I don't know how it compares to others out there but I personally love it! I have seen gains in my flexability and core strength for sure....I also did not go into it expecting that ALONE to work miracles on my physique...but as an addition, yes, I think pilates is worth it.

Have a great work out!

I think it depends on your goals. I don't believe Pilates alone is enough for fat loss or muscle building. Weight training and cardio are much more efficient and effective for these.

However, whenever I regularly include Pilates in my weight/cardio/yoga rotations, my core strength really improves. That's why I do it. (By "regularly include," I mean 2-3 10 min sessions plus 1-2 30 min sessions every nine days.) I also do Cathe's ab work.

As an aside, an ab workout that REALLY increased my core strength was Ab Ripper X (part of the Power 90X series). If increased core strength is your goal, this DVD will definitely do the trick!

I have the Windsor Pilates tapes but I never use them. I have a Pilates Reformer that I use once a week, but I don't really count it like a workout....more like a stretch/relaxation thing.

Mari Windsor is so annoying. I did her workouts a few times, but stopped when I ordered Stretch Max. I like doing Stretch Max better because Cathe is NEVER annoying.

I am thinking about getting a yoga workout though, for my off days.

I agree with Susan. I think pilates is wonderful for increasing core strength. I incorporate it 2-3 times a week to my traditional ab routines. I usually do 20-30 minute sessions. I have noticed a significant increase in my core since doing pilates. It keeps my belly flat as well.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I think I will find a good yoga video. I thought it was just me that thought Mari Windsor was annoying. I cant wait to order so of Cathe's DVDS. I am just doing the ones on fit TV right now. I absolutly love her! She is very motivating, and I feel like I have had a good hard workout whe I am done.

About three years ago, I did Windsor Accelerated Pilates four times a week (early morning, right before getting ready for work). I continued to do my usual Firm workouts in the evening. I wish I had pictures of how wonderful my abs and middle looked! I wore a white bodysuit one day, and you could actually see the definition.

I definitely think it works!

Pilates work they are really great if you do them right, it is doing them right that is usually the problem. Windsor actually does them a little too fast, and if you do them a bit slower you get a bit more benifit from them. It should be a 4 count to do any pilate exercise. Those who do pilates right do enjoy some great benifits, as they are very controled and work the muscle, but you got to work at it, just like any other exercise, the claimes Winsor makes about being able to see results quicker then any other workout is a bit of a stretch. But most paticents that need to strengthen their core before surgery are given those to do because they are very good at strengthing. Like the one you lay on your back on the floor, you stretch your arms over your head, legs out and only about an inch away from each other, and you slowly roll up to where your arms are stretch out over your legs and your your back is straight. Kind of like a full sit up, but your legs are flat on the ground, and your suppose to only use your stomach muscles to get up or hold yourself in that postion also when coming up your hands start to lower from being straight above your head, to where they come down until they are shoulder level and when they are shoulder level you should be all the way up and back stright. Then when you lower your self back down, it's all stomach, you curve yoru spine and your roll down vetebray by vertebra. The slower you go the more work your stomach does, and then you end back up in starting position.

Try that one and see if you like it, I'm not sure if it's on the windsor Accelerated Pilates or not, but it's a great Pilates exercise for the stomach and back. Also during that exercise you want to squeeze internally like when you really have to go pee, but your trying to hold it, and your really use the pelvic muscles, try doing that as well, but do two or three before that step as it's a whole different ball game then your normal type of sit up.

I agree with all the above! I instruct pilates classes and it has immense benefits, most go unnoticed! It really helps create awareness in your posture and focuses on the smaller underlying muscles that don't get used as much, great way to stretch and increase balance.

I noticed my form has improved immensely when it comes to weight lifting and because of that, my results have increased. It really helps to develop the strength of the core which is crucial for helping support the back and spine! Wonderful compliment to any program!

That is just my two cents, as far as Winsor.......I agree with another poster that movements go alittle too fast to really focus on muscle control and you don't get the full benefits! Try

The Pilates Method for weightloss, great dvd - not too fast and hits all the elements!
