What Do You Eat for Energy?

I am just wondering what types of foods you all eat when you need an energy boost? Or...what types of meals throughout the day seem to give you energy without making you feel sluggish?

Hi Rose,

I usually eat 5 or 6 small meals a day. I used to suffer from low blood sugar from time to time but since I started eating more frequently during the day, I never suffer from low blood sugar or low energy. I also think you need to cut out the bad carbs (anything made with white flour) since these types of food convert to sugar in your system. Try eating something with whole grains.

Snicker Marathon low carb bars (peanut butter one is my fav)- high fiber/high protein it's processed so not sure how you feel about that but they are good IMO!

Kashi GoLean Cereal

Apples
strawberries
Grapes

La Tortilla Factory whole wheat wrap w/ fat free I can't believe it's not butter & sugar free jelly (i use the wraps like people would use bread) I am not a bread person & these wraps are only 50 calories, 2 fat, and have 8 FIBER per wrap.

Detour Protein bars- i get the smaller ones (170 calories) & try to always get the "low sugar" ones but I do give in the caramel one that isn't low sugar, I still think it's only like 7-8 grams/per bar & SOO good- tastes like a candy bar.

Fiber one snack bars are good too but sometimes can give you that "bloated/full" feeling from too much fiber so I wouldn't eat right before a workout

Hope that helps!

I only have one suggestion that I can think of at the moment. I have tried Naked Juice "energy" mango motion. It seems to pick me up a few minutes after I drink it and it's good tasting.

I've been really liking the Fiber One bars recently, both the PB & chocolate ones. The bridge the gap between lunch and dinner nicely. And are quite tasty. However, I was eating a chocolate one today and reading the ingredients and one of the ingredients was "ethanol" Ummm, isn't that what I put in my Hyundai's tank???? I'm thinking I'm not sure I want to be eating that!! Yes, I know its a sugar alcohol, but EEWWWW!!!! Just kinda skeeved me out for a moment. But otherwise, I normally just keep a piece of fruit handy. It goes anywhere and if I happen to forget an apple in my desk or car it doesn't go all funky or anything. Bananas on the other hand, will sure stink up a car if forgotten on a hot day or two, but that's another story!! :)

raw coffee beans:p just kidding. just like someone else posted, 6 small meals a day keep me energized throughout the day. if i get super tired i will take a 10 min power nap and that alwasy helps me.

I agree with the 6 meals a day. Really has worked well for me this summer. I have ramped up the work-outs, cleaned up the diet, and lost 10 pounds without losing energy. Nice feeling. I like yogurt or a combo of yogurt and blueberries before I swim. Seems to sustain me.

I agree with the small meals thru the day, although I can only fit 5 instead of 6. Oh, and LOTS of water. Makes a WORLD of difference!

home-made açaí sorbet (made with açai pulp, frozen berries, a dash of rice milk, agave nectar and vanilla)

yerba maté or green tea

a Vega bar, or a smoothie made with Vega smoothie infusion

I feel best when I eat Smart Balance oatmeal for breakfast. It's oatmeal enhanced with barley and ground flax seed. I'm good for 5 hours after a bowl of that stuff. I feel best if I eat mostly salad for the rest of the day, with a big variety of veggies. The only problem is, I don't like having to digest so much during the afternoon, so sometimes I'll just get by on Larabars and Lunabars until about 5:00, and then eat a gigantic salad. Then when I get home from work later that night, I can just have a snack like some fruit and popcorn.
