I know
Shari, I know where you're coming from. Actually, I was on my first diet at the age of 3 months (if only my mother knew of the wonders of breastfeeding! LOL-- not that nursing automatically prevents overweight.) My dad lives on potato chips and diet coke. Dinner when I was growing up was usually boxed. (Vegans should look away now.) Hamburger helper... mac and cheese... fish sticks... No vegetables. No fruits. The only thing we did right was low-sugar cereal. And no juice.
It's a struggle. I'm married to a meat and potatoes man who loves his fried food. If I lived alone, I would be a vegetarian, but with the family, we end up eating a lot of fried food and meat.
I'm currently not on a diet, but I'm counting calories (1300-1800 depending on my exercise) and fiber (25g +). I'm also trying to find healthy, low-fat dinner entrees that would satisfy my family. And working on keeping fruit and vegetables handy.
My older son kicked his weight problem when we started severely limiting the amount of pop we keep in the house (although I know it's not that easy for other kids.) We also stopped being members of the "clean plate club." My younger son doesn't have a weight problem and I hope to keep it that way. Both boys prefer wheat bread to white (!!!) and my older son likes veggies.
It's tough, though, because in spite of all my research, I'm clueless when it comes to implementing this stuff in real life.
