What Cardio Coach and Taekwondo have done for me

So I did KPC today for the first time in who knows how long. Probably a year. I always avoided it because it seemed so hard and I dreaded the last kick combination.

Well...today it was a piece of cake! Compared to how high I get my heartrate on the Nordic Track with Cario Coach, it was almost nothing.

I think I might actually start doing this one when it's in the rotations!

Oh...taekwondo helped me learn to do the kicks correctly. Although, her roundhouses are awkward and I have to adjust them to more of a tkd style.

donna,

i have been doing tkd since 94. it has done wonders for my physically and mentally. you have to keep in mind that the kicks we do in class are different than kicks in kickboxing. in class we work on correct form and technique unless we are sparring. kickboxing requires proper form, but if you angle your feet and body properly to perfom an individual kick, you cant do as many as quickly. you can also hurt yourself. this is why cathe's kicks may seem awkward.

what style are you? i am wtf.

Yeah! That's exactly it!!! I'm trying to do these kicks, but the side kicks she does don't start out in the right stance, and I can't get there fast enough. I've turned the jumping roundhouse into a foot-to-foot roundhouse and that works much better.

I wish I had started back in 94! I'm only a green stripe right now, but I just love it! I'm really dumbfounded at how out of shape a lot of the people are in the class. Some of them look like they'll keel over with a heart attack after just a few front snap-kick with double punch drills.

Not really knowing the different styles, and checking online...I think I'd have to say that we do wtf as well.

Donna -

Do you have a Nordic Track skier thingy? I have one and have never learned how to use it. If it works that good for you, I'll have to get to work on mine!

Yes, I use it with Sean 2 every Saturday and Sunday and it works great. But only with Cardio Coach - otherwise it's a dud. It's a very good workout, I'm usually raining with sweat when I'm finished.

Try getting the motion down with your legs first, then add the arms. It's not so hard. I used to be a skier in high school, so the Nordic Track was easy for me.

It's definitely worth the effort.

donna,

are the forms tae gook? i dont know the spelling. another term is poom se. example, form 1 is tae gook il jung. that is world taekwondo federation style. dont fret about being a green belt. take your time and eventually you will join the black belts. you have a lot to learn, but it is a great experience. enjoy it.

we have lots of different levels at my school. i give anyone in our school credit for being there. actually, i am happy just to have other adults and another woman training with me. i joke with the teenagers to go easy on grandma. one boy asked me "why should we, your kicks hurt?"

enjoy and be careful. also, remember with kickboxing we are wearing shoes. the pivoting is not as smooth as it is with bare feet.

I'm doing Pal Gwe Ee Jang form now and I really like it. It's my 3rd form and so far, my favorite. Of course, the first form, Kibon Poomse, was so basic - but I didn't know it at the time.

I think it's great that people are getting out of their comfort zone and it's wonderful to watch how everyone improves. You definitely get a sense of comeaaderie with those that begin as white belts with you and progress along the way. I was training with one of the young kids at my level last night (maybe 13?). He was SO intense! Telling me what I was doing wrong and getting a little, hmmmm...like scary? about it? Sort of like a drill sergeant. I called him "psycho" and he called me "granny". But it was a lot of fun. Next time, when I'm paired with him...I will know all 3 of my one-step sparring, so he can call ME the pyscho!
