What brand/type of bread do you use if you eat bread...

I now use Nature's Own whole wheat as it has a low calorie count and can have two slices for what most breads are for one.

The only problem is it is whole wheat flour. I have heard whether it is whole wheat or not, flour is still processed too much.

What do you use?

Baker's Inn Honey Whole Wheat or Harvest Multigrain. I don't eat bread very often, and I don't like "light" breads because they don't feel substantial enough for me. I DO have a bread machine and one of these days I plan to start making my own whole wheat bread... someday... ;)

I lost my bread machine in the divorce. And interestingly enough, that's the only thing I lost in the divorce....aside from 220 pounds of useless weight. BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!!!

I use The Baker 7 Grain Whole Wheat or Matthew's Whole Wheat. Matthew's also makes whole wheat english muffins and hamburger buns.

I've had no luck making whole wheat bread in my bread machine. It comes out too dense!

I use whatever is on sale! Although lately all of the breads have been too much $ as far as I'm concerned...is buying a bread machine and making your own cost-effective??

I buy "Food for life" sprouted grain bread (usually the "hamburger" buns rather than the bread, per se). It is "flourless," and made from whole, sprouted grains and beans(wheat, barley, millet, lentils, soybeans, spelt), with malted barley as a sweetener and to help things raise, water, yeast and salt. 1.5 g. fat, 34 g carbs (including 5 g fiber), and 9 g protein per bun.

Some batches of the buns are rather "sturdy," so I often microwave them for 12-15 seconds to soften them (but I can't stand those soft "whole grain" breads that aren't really whole grain, and have a list of chemicals in them that make them softer). They also come in hot dog buns and bread, but I'm not that much into the bread.

FYI: Most "whole grain" breads you can get in a grocery store (including many already listed) include whole grain, but if you look at the label, it's not the first ingredient (that's usually "unbleached wheat flour...which DOESN'T mean WHOLE wheat flour).

Wendy - making your own bread is usually not going to save you much, if any, money over buying bread in the store - BUT, if you make your own bread, you can make it without preservatives, high fructose corn syrup and other weird stuff, which is a HUGE advantage over most store-bought breads. :) Plus, the smell of baking bread makes your house smell soooo good!

I have found it very upsetting that there ia alot of sugar and high fructose corn syrup in them as well. Nothing is sacred. deb

I too get frustrated by the high fructose and added sugars. People at the store must think of me as the crazy bread lady, cause if I can't get my regular bread I spend ten minutes reading the labels of other breads then tossing each one back on the shelf, grumbling under my breath!

The first ingredient in my Nature's Own is Bromate free stone ground whole wheat flour. Does this sound alright? 50 cal, 1 gm fat, and 2 gm. fiber per slice

Jane, I buy Nature's Own, too. It may still be processed food, but it's never made me "fat" or ill. I like it for the same reasons you do, and that each slice has 4 grams of protein.

Especially high fructose corn syrup. That stuff seems to crop up in so many things (though not anything I eat!).

Kathryn, since I started coming to this forum, about three weeks, I've been reading labels like crazy. Some things have really surprised me.

I also buy the nature's own, but in the wheat n soy kind. It's really good and it's night in protien. I never get enough protien so it's great I can get some extra in the bread. I love bread and can't give it up. :)
