On this topic, a slightly interesting things happened to me. I was flipping thru a magazine and it had "the best and worst" exercises listed for your particular shape. I classified myself into the "hourglass" shape based on..., well, on how I know my body. I, mean, certainly I've seen it and think I know what it looks like. Right? Well I was outside in my bathing suit on Sun. and saw my shadow. It did not look like the "hourglass" but rather the "ruler" shape! I suppose I was a bit bummed, but it was nonetheless surprising because I really would have thought I'd know this.
Just goes to show we don't always see ourselves accurately, for better or worse.
RhiannonW, based on this classification scheme, it sounds like you are a "cone" or "ruler" -- picture the outline of each. probably more the cone I am thinking.
Generally speaking, I am not so sure this matters for our exercise selections. But I could be wrong. Come to think of it, the article said there were no "worst" exercises for the ruler shape. So maybe that is why I tend to think this--because it wouldn't matter for me.
