What are you doing with your kids

for the summer? Any activities lined up? I am trying to figure out what will keep my kids busy and not complaining that "there is nothing to do"! There is only 2 weeks of school left. Yikes!

Two weeks of school left? Where the heck are you? My DD goes until the end of June!

I'm a single mom who works full-time, so thus far, she's enrolled in two week-long day camps, and I'm off for a week. That almost covers it for me, as her Dad has her the other half of the time and he makes his own arrangements. Or at least he's supposed to. But that's a whole OTHER story:p

Illinois. The last day is May 19th. I will then have all 3 of my sons home. They will go back the middle of August. When does your DD go back Shelley if she doesn't get out until the end of June?

I work full-time as does my DH so our son (who's only 4) will be at daycare. During the summer I only work until 2:30 - we're buying him a 3ft pool so we'll most likely be swimming every afternoon. I signed him up for swimming lessons so that starts on May 23, every evening until June 10th. Saturday I'm signing him up for soccer which starts in August.

The last day for students around my area is June 9th.

my son is only 13 months so nothing doing this summer except playgroup, the pool, the park, etc. Though that does sound like a lot?? LOL

Kids ages 9 and 12.

The nine year old plays baseball, that takes up alot of evenings.
He also will go to a week long Educational scholar program (that is fun w/ experiments etc)

DD age 12, has one week cheerleading camp, one week basketball camp.
I think i'll enroll both in Summer Bible school for one week.

We live out in the boonies, so i always look for things to line up to keep them busy.

Hi Sabrina! I live in NY & being a working mother it doesn't leave me any option but to always place my son into a summer camp. He's 13 and believe you me he totally enjoys his summer! He's taken on day trips every day plus 3 overnight trips. The bus picks him up at the house & drops him off usually between 5 to 6. My kid has no complaints.LOL Kathy:D

My DH and I had made a list about two months ago. Here's a bit of our correspondence:

we can concentrate on teaching DS how to ride a bike
and how to skate

go on mini-hikes. The place Candy told you about. Also Prospect Mtn. in Lake George has a trolley. I wouldn’t want to push him too soon going on a full hike.

on boating days, spend more time in the water, and do some swimming

I think he'd like to fly a real kite.

You and I can play tennis and DS can be our "ball boy"

spend a day at a park with a playground and picnic area

go for a drive... every once in a while DS asks me if I remember when we went to Vermont, and how he had a good time that day.

Just some thoughts for now.

We also go camping at least twice a year too.

Hi Ladies. I too work full time so my youngest son, age 9, goes to summer camp at his school. They go swimming 2 days a week, skating/rollerblading one day a week, a field trip one day a week, and Fridays are pizza and a movie day. They also play outside on the playground and in the gym. He also plays baseball so that takes up the evenings.

I am SO looking forward to a good summer! Always am once the snow starts to melt. I love every stage with my kids but I have to say they are at a really great place right now. They are all old enough to do stuff right along with me. I don't have to take care of every little thing for them so we all end up have a lot of fun together.

My youngest two got new bikes so we will be mountain biking a lot. We would like to knock off some legs of the Tahoe Rim Trail by backpacking. Yosemite is definitely in the plan! Half Dome is our family goal for the summer there and my heart starts thumping just thinking about it! We also spend a lot of time at the lake doing lake stuff. Swimming, fishing, snorkeling, and sipping lemonade.

Basically cram as much into our short season as possible. It will all come to a screeching halt in August when my husband starts Paramedic school. Until then, we play;-)

Dani53,

Sounds like you are going to have a great summer! I wish we could join you, it sounds like a lot of fun! We need to find some trails for walking and mountain biking here. I am not sure where to go.

Have to do some research and figure out what is available for the boys to do. Some of the programs they have brough fliers home from the school are very expensive. I couldn't believe it, especially with having 3 kids.

Susan,

Looks like you have a great summer planned too!! WOW!

I really don't like the typical school year schedule. The scool year is toooo long, kids get sick of it, then summer is tooo long, and they get sick of that too. I would much rather have year around school with more frequent, shorter breaks.

Anyway, that's not an option here so we try and keep busy with:
Band classes for a few weeks
Basketball camp for a week
swim lessons for a two weeks
scout camp
bible camp
a few trips to brother in law's lake cabin
other things I can't think of right now.

And last year I started with one science lesson/experiment a week. That was great bucause the kids got to have a friend over and we all do the experiment together. I love Bill Nye the science guy and get ideas on the website and from his books.

This year I'm adding one art lesson a week. We just did this lesson last weekend when it was snowing (!) and we all had a good time with it: http://www.homeschoolarts.com/cp-2-1.htm

Then if they start getting too board and playing too many video games I get out the books and we have read or problem solving hour.

My kids go until the end of June because of all the snow days we had this year. My daughter (9) will be taking summer lessons at her ballet school and attending a creative arts day camp. My son (12) will be doing various athletic programs sponsored by the rec department in our town AND having bar mitzvah lessons once a week. Neither is interested in overnight camp which is fine with me although I think my daughter may want to go next year. My son will never go, he's not the type. I don't think we are taking a family vacation this year (due to above mentioned Bar Mitzvah next March) but my daughter and I are going to American Girl Place in New York at the end of August to celebrate her 10th (double digits!) birthday. I am so looking forward to that!!

Shelley,

Rather than me writing a long post, just check out this link.

I love this company because it promotes a healthy self-image for pre-teen girls. Unlike Barbie or Bratz.
Their books are excellent as well, especially "The Care and Keeping of You". No preteen girl should be without it.

That looks great! Thanks. My daughter is only 7, but I'd love to drag her away from Barbie and My Scene and Bratz. Those Bratz chicks don't even have NOSES, for crying out loud!

I want to second the opinion on Care and Keeping of You book. My DD has this, got it at age 10. She reads it all the time and keeps it hidden
;-)

Like it's a big secret :)
