What am I missing?

Hi friends. I was looking at platemates the other day as I figure out all of the equipement I have yet to get for STS. I knew they were pricey. So this a.m. I was using my barbell. Now I have 2 1/2 and 1 1/4 pound plate weights for on my barbell. Then I thought, well why don't I just pick up a few magnets, then those would attach to the ends of my dumbells. Surely it cannot be that easy to save that much money. Someone tell me why this won't work.

I got magnets that weigh about .5# a piece from some scientific website. I bought 8 of them. I can bring my dumbbells up to 2# each and also use them on my barbell. They work well for when you only have to move up 1 or 2#. Platemates are way overrated and overpriced.

Lorrie..funny thing that you post about this today b/c yesterday my DH came home from work with four .5# magnets for me :) I've mentioned a few times that I really wish we could afford paceweights but it's just not happening in the budget right now. I used them for the first time today and I noticed a difference. He's going to bring home four more for me when he can get his hands on some. I must agree with Debbie, paceweights are way overpriced ;)

Who'd'a thuunk it? Chastity where did he get them do you know (and how SWEET is he)? I'm thinking hardware store?

I'd love to know where I can buy these magnets too! Are they just regular 'ol magnets that I can get at the hardware store? Sounds like exactly what I've been looking for--Platemates/Paceweights are sooooo expensive!

They are too expensive. Unfortunately, I had the "I gotta haves". So I got them and paid $$$ But I do love them!!

Lorrie and Allison..I'm not quite sure where they originally came from since he acquired them from work. They were just sitting around in storage not being used. I'll ask him when he gets home tonight.

bumping - anyone know where to find magnetic weights at a reasonable price? I just can't get myself to spend the money on paceweights! Thanks in advance,
Paula

Paula..thanks for bumping this and sorry to those who have been waiting for my response..it slipped my mind :(

The magnets that DH brought home for me came from an old car top sign like this:

http://www.carsigns.com/Magnets.asp

He did some calling around to his suppliers and really didn't get anywhere regarding ordering replacement magnets at a reasonable price since they offer wholesale prices.

We did some searching online and found similiar magnets to what I have but after looking at about 10 sites the cheapest we could find were these:

http://www.magnet4sale.com/product.php?productid=16717&cat=363&page=1

I'm not really sure you would save that much in the end since 9 of them would cost you $36.00 and paceweights are $36.95.

Sorry guys, hopefully Debbie will check back in and can share the scientific website she ordered from b/c all of the scientific sites I looked into had outrageous prices for their magnets.

If I come across anything cheaper I'll be sure to let you know.

Quite honestly I was just thinkking of going to a hardware store and getting 4 or 6 strong (but small) magnets. The thought being that I will just put the magnets on my 1 1/4# or 2 1/2# plate weights (for my barbell) and stick them via the magnets onto the end of my hex dumbells. I'm not looking for the weights themselves to BE the weights - just to attach them.

Lorrie I understand what type of magnet you're looking for..just a plain black magnet. That will work for you since you already have platemates. I don't have platemates or paceweights so I'm attaching the 4 magnets DH brought home directly to my DB and BB weights. That's why I'm hoping he can bring me home 4 more, that way I'll have enough to add an extra 2lbs per DB.

Sorry I misunderstood you and you had to read through all of that info I provided

I've needed Platemates for a long time and finally ordered them. They're already en route so I hope they're worth it. I've been fed up with the limitations of dumbbell weight for so long.

Thanks for the info, ladies. I never thought to try a hardware store. It might be worth it just to see what they have before ordering. I have a feeling I'll be buying the paceweights though.
