What am I doing wrong?

Hi, Everyone! I got my videos last week and I LOVE them!! Back to the question. I am tring to lose weight ( like everyone else). It seems like it takes my forever just to lose half a pound. I workout about 2 hours a day , 6 days a week. I think I eat peatty good. I have a protein bar at 6:15 a.m, a bagel at 8:30 a.m, an apple with peanut butter or creakers with peanut at 12:00, a protein shake at 1:30, some fruit at 3:00, and a nother protein shake at 5:30. I know I should eat veggies, but I really do not like them and I do not eat meat at all. Do I need to eat more? I am pretty much on the move a day long. With my job as a vet tech and my 4 horses I am very busy. So what am I doing wrong? Have A Blessed Day!!!

I'd love to know the secret too!! I'm going thru the same problem, it's like I have zero metabolism. I've tried cutting back on calories, increasing calories, changing workout intensity and nothing seems to work. The scale doesnt budge and my clothes dont fit any different!! It's so frustrating!! I need to lose 15 lbs and I feel so defeated at times. I'm giving it another go with a new set of rotations so we'll see what happens. Sorry I cant help too much but at least it's comforting to know that there's someone else out there going thru the same thing!

Lotsa Luck,

Stacy

I'm guessing starvation mode is setting in. It doesn't look like you are eating much FOOD, and you are exercising quite a lot. Is that two hours of cardio a day, or an hour of cardio and an hour of weights, or what? All those protein shakes and bars are not actual food--sure, they have vitamins and stuff, but I think I've read that your body absorbs nutrients better from real food. Maybe you could see a nutritionist to help you set up a "diet" that could work for you. Also concentrate on weight training so that your body will burn slightly more when it is resting, and make sure that you are taking enough rest days!
I know you say you don't like vegetables, but you don't have to eat broccoli and spinach (both of which I love ;-) ) A salad with red peppers, cucumbers, tomoatoes, green lettuce (not iceburg) , with some chick peas thrown in is at least a little bit of vegetables, and some protein...Are you not eating meat for ethical reasons, or for health reasons. If it is for health reasons, maybe you could throw is some chicken once in a while--it isn't un healthy. If not, beans are a great source of protein and fibre, both of which are good for you, and I think you are severly lacking in the fibre department. Whole wheat breads are filling and also high in fibre--throw two peices together with a little cheese and a bunch of vegetables (sorry, you really NEED them!). Also, maybe a whoel grain cereal with skim milk in the morning, and some fruit (blueberries, strwberries, etc.). Concentrate on getting nutrients--anything colorful is great for your health!.
Oh, I don't know. I hope you'll be able to figure something out that will help you--but I think if you eat, you may begin to ENJOY the taste of foods, and the fact that they are feuling your body for your workouts and daily life are the added benefit!
Good luck :)
Wendy

I had no idea you were a Vet Tech, I am too. I thought I was the only one on here. So lonely, sob! ;-)
Anyway, I know your problem eating on the job, I have to eat on the run all day long too. Wendy's advice is absolutely right, the problem for me is finding time to get it all in. But I'm working on it.
Recently I have put more emphasis on weight training, although I still do my cardio of course (first thing in the morning on empty stomach), and at the same time have been working hard to get my diet up to par.
I am starting to lose weight after a long plateau, so not sure which tactic is working! Probably both.
Do you work in a hospital, or what? Large or small animal? Where do you live?
I would be happy to exchange encouragement & ideas for eating on the run.
Ruth :)

What great advise!

Hi Wendy,
That's a lot of great advise, thanks for sharing it! I personaly love a good spinach salad myself! I think your guess about starvation mode sounds pretty sound ~ I remember reading something from Cathe once saying to take in at least something like 1200 calories a day in order to keep your metablolism up, otherwise your body will take the cue to conserve all the fuel it can. I want to lose about 10 or 15 pounds but I have to confess, eating too little has not been my problem, I just love food! Well, here's to healthy weight losses all around :) !

Hey, another animal lover!

Oh wow! Do you think it's about time to start an animal lover's forum? What'cha think Mogambo? Okay okay, we can just stick with the open discussion forum for animal talk ;-) .

You aren't eating enough, my dear!!! A sandwich is just as easy to eat as a protein bar....make some at home and bring them to work with you. Cut them in quarters, and eat them like that. You could pack two or three sandwiches everyday. That's a start, anyway.

How is your energy level? I'll bet it's not that great with all the exercise you're doing and that job that keeps you running.

Are you taking any vitamins?

I agree, you are not eating enough. Also, you may be eating too much sugar (protein bars, shakes; plus some fruits have a higher glycemic rate than others) which also means extra carbohydrates. And even though you don't eat a lot of veggies or meat, if you WANT to truly lose weight safely, you HAVE to be healthy and that HAS TO include vegetables and meat. You can get added protein from eggs, tuna or beans, but very lean red meat is even better. Remember, you have to make some sacrifice to get what you want to accomplish. And what makes you not like vegetables? I'm not trying to be mean, but my husband used to be the same way becasue he never tried the vegetables or only tried them once as a child - and decided then that he didn't like them. Tastebuds change, and for the most part the "I don't like that" attitude can be all in your head. Now, this is also coming from a "Mikey" who will eat virtually everything, so maybe I'm not being understanding enough because I am not like that, but...........good luck!! : )

Since you work out vigorously, you need to bulk up you diet. Protein bars are a great quick way to get nutrition, but I personally don't use them becuase they are meal replacements and they don't contain all the nutrients a body needs. Certain carbs like potatoes, rice, pasta combined with a protein and a little fat is just the ticket. Do you like soup? You really should try to develop a taste for some vegetables. Vegetables are a powerhouse of phytochemicals which can prevent cancer and heart disease. Otherwise eat LOTS of fruit. The average woman burns around 1300 calories just to exist. I calculated your daily intake at less than that. Combined with the exercise you do, it seems like you'd be dropping pounds fast. But your body thinks it's being deprived, so it slows the metabolism down to hold on to your fat stores. Eat! Your body will thank you for it!

I'd also like to encourage you to eat more real food It's my understanding that those who have been at too low of a caloric intake should gradually ramp up the calories to give the metabolism time to adjust. If not, you're going to gain some weight. You might also gain some water weight if you add fiber to your diet. Please don't worry about it. The problem with supplements including vitamins is that they don't contain the micro-nutrients (e.g. phytochemicals) that is found in real food. Also there is much less of a risk of toxicity & problems with nutrient absorption with real food. I'd love to hear what happens to your energy level as you increase calories, though you didn't indicate it was lagging.

I get most of my protein from plant sources. If you need ideas let me know. Though I'm not sure how to eat a nutritious vegetarian diet without eating vegetables :-hmmm.

Good luck & keep us posted!

Hi Farmgirl! I know exactly how you feel. I too was very frustrated about not getting any leaner. You got the exercising down pat except I would take 1 or 2 days off from your grueling workout sessions. Also everybody so far has been right in that your not taking in enough food. I too did what you were doing except snacking every 2 hours and having a protein shake in the evening for my dinner. WRONG! My body definitely went into starvation mode because I wasn't taking in enough calories than what I was expelling. I've been in contact with Janis Saffell (mainly it was because of her new tapes that came out) but she was approached by Karen Voight who's one of the directors of Bodywise products. I bought the Lean Index Kit as well as the Workout Formula kit and MY OH MY what a difference this has made to my body!! In only 1 weeks time I've become much more leaner than before. Go onto their website bodywise.com and check it out. Janis Saffell has been on these products for 1 year now and what a difference in her body! Not that she didn't look terrific before but she was suffering from fatigue just like I was. Let me know what you think and I hope I've been of some help. Take care and good luck! Kathy

Thanks to all who replyed. I have learned alot for these posts. I am a vary pick person, so I guess I never learned to like veggies. I will have to try to like them. I will eat them in like pasta or something like that.
I think a amimal forum would be great!! I live in AL. I work at a small amimal clinic. I wish I could work at a large amimal clinic but there is none around.

Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have A Blessed Day!!!

This thread was very interesting to me.

Last March I took a look at myself and did not like what I saw. I had stopped exercising for two years and I was overweight and felt mushy. I re-started my exercise program with vigor, using mostly Cathe's Pure Strength series and some of her step bench tapes as well as MIS.

I altered my diet as well.

I reached my goal weight last week (a loss of twenty pounds) and have found my muscles again. I can get into all my size 2 and 4 clothes that have been languishing in my closet for two years.

My "new" body is toned, trim and there is definitely some muscle definition going on. My new goal is to have Cathe arms. If I could even come close to that I would be thrilled.

Anyway, if anyone wants to know what kind of food plan I used please e mail me at [email protected]. I am not a nutritional expert by any stretch of the imagination. And everyone is different and what worked for me may not work for you. But if you want to hear how I did it, just let me know. I would be happy to share. And, by the way, I did and still do use protein shakes (Myoplex Lite) and bars as a meal replacement (Pure Solid Protein is great).

I am 52 years old and have found losing weight much harder than it was for me to do twenty years ago. But I did it and you can too.

Marlene, I'm so happy for you! You set your goals & went into action, & look at you now! Congratulations, you have inspired me to "keep on limping" along.
Ruth :)

LAST EDITED ON Aug-07-01 AT 05:00AM (Est)[p]Congratulations, girl! It CAN be done, but you have to work at it, right? You proved that there ain't no magic bullet, just eat right and exercise and the weight will come off. You have every right to be proud of yourself.

Now you have to work hard at keeping it off, but stick with us, and we'll encourage you on your maintenance program.:7

Thank you so much Starlight and Honeybunch (love those names).

I am so happy to have found this website and get to "talk" to others with similar interests to mine. Often this website has encouraged me to keep going when I did not see much progress for a few weeks. I find all of the posts interesting and feel like I actually know many of you.

Hi Robin!

You posted a question quite similar to this several months ago, and the answers were the same...you are not eating enough real food. This second post concerns me, as I wonder if you are having difficulty eating. I'm no expert on anorexia, and I don't want to offend you, but I would rather risk offending you then to let what may be a cry for help go unanswered. Do you think that you may currently be struggling with an eating disorder? I'm thinking maybe you posted your question again so that you could convince yourself that it is ok to eat.

Please forgive me if I am way off base.

Veronica

I was wondering the same thing...this is not the first time that you have asked about your diet on this forum and received similar answers. Forgive me as well if I am off-base but it sounds to me like you eat very little and exercise excessively. From what I remember about what you have posted about your weight in the past, it is normal and even low...I am worried that you are not looking at yourself in a realistic way...what do you think?

Shannon
