Went into shock today...(a little long)

It started with what I thought was a pulled back muscle. Then the doc said it might be pulled ligaments. Three weeks later, the pain was so severe that I could not use my legs on my way to use the shower in the morning. I couldn't believe what was happening. I began to lose my sight, then all I could hear was a loud motor like sound in my head. My family came in to see what was wrong, and they thought I was dying or something. I couldn't speak. My body wouldn't stop sweating, I was ice cold and did I mention I couldn't move. My family said I had lost all my color. In a weird way, losing all my senses was sort of a relief, because I couldn't feel the pain anymore..

So, off to the doctors, of all days, when nearly everything is closed including alot of the roads.

I was very scared. My doctor put me on some more meds and referred me to physical therapy. I'm not sure, but I don't think he really believed what had happened until my husband stood up and vouched for me, (my dh is the type that seeing is believing, and when he saw me that way, he took charge and had me at the hospital fast). The doctor sort of laughed it off and half-heartedly slapped my back, "OUCH" they never took x-rays either. I am very scared this will happen again. I will see what the physical therapist says...

I have to rest even more. I think I will go out of my mind, resting...

In a very strange way, it made my dh and I a little closer, he took care of me when it really mattered and I trusted he would. It was a strange, but Happy Valentines Day...

In the meantime, I have to wait to use the intensity series which I just orderedx(

I just wanted to share to see if anyone else has experienced this?

Take care,

Carrie

YIKES! That sounds very scarey Carrie. I am sorry you went through this. I have never been through this nor do I know of anyone who has. Hopefully someone with some insight by way of personal experience or a medical professional will read this and be able to help you out.

I hope you are better soon!

Wow, that sounds scary. I have no advice but I hope that they can figure out what is causing it. Enjoy the evening w/ your Valentine. ;-)

With the kind of laugh-it-off attitude the doc showed, you may need a new doctor.

I am very glad you are safe now, though I would put that more to your husband's quick thinking than your doctor's less-than-profesional behavior!

JMHO, gently meant.

some of what you describe are symptoms of multiple sclerosis. you need to see a qualified MD. What is your age? Many are diagnosed in their 20-30's

not to totally freak you out, as this is is a fitness board, and I am a not a doc, but you should read up on it at WEBMD or something, and see what you think. hope you are feeling better

Yes, as Catherine said get a 2nd opinion & quick. It may be "nothing" but it could also be something that there will be a "next time" & maybe you won't fair as well, god forbid. Please go to another doctor and have tests run.

Take care!

Hi Carrie,

I am a nurse, but I won't even pretend I know what happened to ya. I just want to add to the others' advice to get a second opinion--from a neurologist, if you can. Inability to walk, losing sight, hearing a loud noise in your head, losing speech and having irregular body temperatures is not something that can be diagnosed without conclusive testing, and can't be "cured" by Physical Therapy. Again, please see a neurologist, and document all your symptoms including getting your family's input as to what they observed as well. This could be something as easy to treat as a bacterial infection that affected your brain to something more complicated, but in my opinion that doc blew you off. The least he should have done was blood work...and then gone on from there. I am curious to know what diagnosis that doc gave you and what meds he prescribed, if you don't mind sharing that info with us. I realize it may be too personal......

Thank you for all your support. I am 33 years old. The doctor gave me, cyclobenzaprine and hydrocodone. They helped me sleep better through the night. I didn't wake up in agony, and that's a plus...But trying to walk in the morning was so painful still, that I had to walk from chair, and rest, to the couch and rest, to finally the kitchen for some coffee. This is just ridiculous. I really have no idea how I hurt myself. If I knew I'd make sure never to do it again.

Thank you again, I really appreciate the support:)

My goodness woman! Take good advice and go see another doctor/neurologist! Losing your sight and the other symptoms you described are NOT normal, nor should they be treated in such a cavalier manner by an MD.
I am worried about you, get another opinion, let them run tests or whatever needs to be done to find out what is going on!
I understand what it is like to have doctor's scoff at you and your symptoms, especially if you are healthy looking and fit. I think they deal with so many overweight, inactive people that it is hard for them to believe that you might actually have a problem.

Carrie, ((((((((hugs))))))))

I had seen an endocrinologist for years for my diabetes, and when I passed out in high school from a low blood sugar, he said "eh, so you lost a few brain cells". I left his office and have never seen him again.

I think it's important to put your own fears (and those of your DH!!) ahead of your doctor's brush off. It's YOUR body; treat it as such! Never feel badly for such a thing, either, btw.

I don't see much difference here than if this had been your car that completely wacked out while you were driving, and your mechanic had said you needed an oil change. TRUST YOURSELF and go find a doctor who can and will treat you as you deserve.

((((((((hugs again))))))))))

RE: Went into shock today...(a little long) - Carrie Please Get Help Today!!!

Carrie , please please get on the phone NOW to see a neurologist and other specialists today! Tell them this is an emergency, you are scared and not being treated well. Demand action! Wait in their waiting room if you have to. Worry about paying for it all later (I foind out recently that most neurologists are not taking insurance these days; just go - get an advance from a credit card, borrow, whatever - you are worth it precious girl).

And do not take the hydrocodone if you can. This is toxic stuff; had it IV'd into me when I had a migraine, then prescribed. My usual MD was away when that all happened; upon return he tossed it out for me and gave me the right meds. Was without pain of course, but hallucinating and had withdrawal symptoms for days.

This is your wake up call Carrie. If this were your husband or daughter or son, how would you handle it? Handle it that way for yourself. Please. Do not want to be an alarmist, just a realist. Let us all know how you are doing, o.k.?

Carrie, did the doctor actually give you a diagnosis of what he thought was causing the problems?

How frightening!
Glad to hear nothing serious happened (like hitting your head falling in the shower).

I re-read your post twice and (as an internal medicine doc) I think what you experienced was a vasovagal reaction to your severe pain. If I read correctly, you had very severe pain so bad you could not walk, which was immediately followed with a near blackout/fainting type experience. This is scary when it happens but fortunately not too dangerous (unless you fall and hit your head.) The vasovagal reaction includes a sudden feeling of lightheadedness followed by breaking out in a severe sweat (hot and cold feelings), sometimes intense nausea, vision dimming out as you begin to go into a faint, the roaring in your ears, and the rapid drop in blood pressure causing you to "go to ground" so to speak. Once you're flat on your back you regain your blood pressure and the symptoms quickly subside. Hopefully this is just a reaction to the pain you had that day. But it does sound like the original condition, your back pain, has not been properly worked up and diagnosed. I would definitely go to another doctor.
Here is a link describing symptoms which sound like yours. Again, I think it was just a reaction to your severe pain that triggered it (pretty common.)

OH MY GOD!! That happened to me a few months ago. I was very constipated and having REALLY bad stomach cramps and I passed out in my bathroom. As soon as I came to I threw up. It was really scary, but my doctor said it was a vasovagal reaction. Not fun. Take Care!
