Well, the fire engines have all left....

DH woke up about 4am and smelled smoke. He investigated and found a small fire in our chimney. We heat with a wood burner in the basement. The chimney gets swept twice a year and we only burn very dry wood.

We had three fire engines and an ambulance in front of the house. The chief said it was pretty much a non-event for them, but it was pretty scary for us. They raised a guy in a bucket and he knocked the creosote off the chimney wall and dropped a fire retardant down on it. Luckily, nothing was damaged. We'll have to get the sweep out to check out the chimney...

OK, I'm ready for the fun part of life to start now. As Jimmy says, "They've got riots, fires and mudslides. They've got sushi in the mall..."

OMG,im glad nothing was damaged and most of all...nobody was hurt. I would of been terrified too. Hugs to ya Robin.

Holy Schmoly Batman!!!

I would have had a heart attack!!! Thank God no one was hurt. Are you guys okay emotionally??? Seriously that is such an EVENT, that him calling it a non-event scares me. Fireplace can be dangerous. We switched over to gas, but it doesn't really do much other than look pretty!!!

So happy you are all safe!!!!

Oh Robin, so glad that everyone is safe and nothing was damaged! I agree, that sounds very very scary!! Hope you and DH aren't too upset. Thinking of you...

Thank goodness you are ok! I'm sure the fireman was just trying to make you feel better by saying it was a non-event for them. Chimney fires can be dangerous though. I'm glad you were not hurt!

Wow, what an ordeal! I, too, am glad no one was hurt, but I hope you guys are doing okay.

Geez, Robin! I can't imagine waking up to something like that at 4 am! I'm glad is WAS a non-event and that all of you are okay!!!!!

OMG! That must've been so scary! I'm sorry this happened to you, & so glad you're all OK.

Hey, do you have a fireplace liner? Most older homes don't have them but they're supposed to prevent this kind of stuff. Or maybe I should shut up b/c I'm guessing the FFs already asked you this.

Robin,

So glad you are all okay! That's really scary. (I think your DH waking up when the fire was small made it a "non-event"!!)

Thanks for your concern, everyone. Yes, we are all fine. The cats were a little annoyed that they had to wait for breakfast.

Laura, yes, we have a liner, but we'll have to have the chimney sweep out to see if it's cracked. Guess we better call the insurance company too, in case this turns out to be something more expensive than it appears.

Robin- What a fright that was! I am surprised it happened with the chimney sweep coming in twice per year. Thankfully you are all safe! And kudos to DH for smelling smoke and acting on it.

Robin! How scary! I am so relieve that you and your family are safe and the house has minimal damage. WHEW! You must be so relieved! Take care...

I am so sorry this happened to you. What a way to wake up. That is amazing your DH smelled the fire before it got worse. No young kids in the house? -- that would have been a thrill for my DDs to see firefighters in a big bucket!!! I sure hope it doesn't turn into an expensive problem to fix.

Robin -- you scared the bejeebeez outa me - can only imagine how scared you mast have been! So glad you are ok. <<<hugs>>>
