weights positions

I just bought a step, and All Step came with it. I'm new to Cathe and have only been doing the tape for about a week, but I love it. One question on the overhead press, though. Other tapes I've done (Denise Austin, Arms & Abs of Steel) always have palms face forward on the overhead press, but Cathe does them facing inward on this tape. Does she always use this positioning? What's the difference?

The palms-facing-in position allows your shoulder joint to be in "neutral position," which helps avoid impingement or pinching in the shoulder joint. With the palms forward position while holding a barbell or dumbells, there is more of a risk of impingement. I always do overhead presses with dumbells so that I can use the neutral position or one that is close to neutral (hands in kind of a 45-degree position).

From a standpoint of function I think it is important to train in a variety of positions.

Then when you need to do some heavy work you will be strong enough to do it without hurting yourself. Variety also prevents overuse injuries. So there is some value to the palms forward position.

The behind-the-head position is valuable to use occasionally for overhead presses, too. The reason? For doing lower body work, you can train to get that bar onto your back.
