weights & fast twitch muscles

Hi all,

My son is taking a weight lifting class at school and incorporated into thier routine they use weights to work fast twitch muscles. Does anyone know anything about this? He says they use 60% of their maximum and then explode on the up phase. I know they do it with squats and bench press, but I'm not sure which other exercises.

Hi Tracy! While I don't know what the teacher's overall agenda is in this class, I'm assuming that the current program is designed to build power and strength. Fast twitch muscles are the strength and power producing muscles. They are good for explosive bursts of anaerobic energy for sprinting, jumping, lifting and interval work. Hope this helps.
