Weights before cardio for fat loss?

Cathlete
Hi there! Posted this to Cathe, but wanted to put it out here as well.

Happy Brrrrrsday from CO! Below zero tonight. So, I apologize if this has been asked before, but I've been reading a lot lately about doing weights before cardio for max fat burn? What is the verdict on this?

Thanks!
Pam

From what I've read by people in the know (those who do research and/or keep up on research), that seems to be the general consensus.

(And talk about cold! I'm in Illinois, and right now, it's around 13 degrees, with a windchill of -4! AND it will be getting colder tonight!)

I don't know. I do weights before cardio because cardio makes me sweat and I don't want to sit in my sweat while doing weights.

Hi Kathryn aka Snow Sister!

Thanks very much! Okay, so what is a DeCathlete? Does it have something to do with Decathalons? Ohhh, so much to learn!

Stay warm!

Pam

Hi Lastchance! That's funny cuz it's true! I did find that I had a harder time really kickin' it in cardio today - I did the full Muscle Endurance instead of focusing on a single body part. That could be why. Open for any advice!

I always seem to do cardio before weight because after weights I dont feel like doing Cardio. I know here in Nebraska with wind chill it is going to be -30 to-40 below zero. between all the snow and the cold temperture schools have been closed all week except one day.

Hi Fitat49!

I agree, that's my problem as well. I can still push out the weights after cardio but kind of lose my umph doing weights then cardio.

Wow! You win on the weather front! What a crazy winter. Stay warm!

Hi Pam-

If fat burning is your goal, then you should do cardio first. If strength gains is your priority do weights first.

I've heard ( and I believe Cathe has said the same thing) that you should do whatever is most important to you first so that you are fresh and focused for that activity.

I used to always do weights after cardio and found that when I switched it up to weights first, I saw big improvements in strength. But that was my goal.

Take care, Lynn M.

Hi Lynn,

Thanks very much for that clarification! I find working out in that order is easier and more natural for me, so I've decided to stick with it. That way I still have something left for weights.

Have a great weekend!

Does anyone have any research links or source that I could read more about this topic? I'd appreciate it.

Wow....great info!

Will you guys hate me if I tell you it's been in the 70 and 80 degree range in Southern Cal this week?

:) Elizabeth

Weight training is far more important as you get older because of the amount of muscle mass you lose. It helps you stay even, if that makes sense. However, life is an experiment. Try it both ways and see what works for you.

With Kathryn in Illinois, below zero right now and most unhappy about it.
