Weighted w/o before run?

As a regular outdoor runner (20 miles/week) I run first to warm up and then finish my workout time with whatever weighted routine I have scheduled. I find that running first is a great warm up for me as I work up to a steady heart rate.

I have noticed that almost all of your rotations that include running are sequenced with the weighted workout first. (Eg; Novemner rotation has PLB then run)

Do you have a specific rationale for this sequencing from an efficacy point of view?

I am not Cathe, but, when I was running 50 miles a week, I always did my weight workout after my run. I think the PLB works your legs so hard that you might not find running so easy after you do it. Last week, I did PLB before one of Cathe's kickboxing routines, and it was a big mistake.

For me, it doesn't matter much if I work my upper body before my cardio, but I do not care to work my lower body before I step, run, or kickbox.
 
Hi X! You will find many mixed opinions on whether to do your cardio workout before you weight workout. My philosophy is to do whatever your main focus is first. If weight training is your main focus, do it first. If cardio is your main focus do it first. You will always be most mentally and physically fresh for the first part of your workout.

If you are focusing on each equally (cardio and weights) alternate putting one first and then the other first on a different workout.

It sounds as if you enjoy doing your run first as a good solid warm up. If this is the case, stick with it.

I used to do the same too but then I found most of my weight workouts suffered because I was too fatigued to get into my weights. So for me, if at all possible, I try to split the two up (day and night workouts).

Another thing you can do is get a nice 15 minute warm up run then go right into you weights and finish with a 15 min. (or longer) run.

Remember, the main thing is that you do it and don't dread it.
