Weighted Vests

Hi, everyone!

I have finally decided to invest in a weighted vest, because I am really risking injury trying to hoist a heavy barbell over my head during the course of a leg workout. I often get little twinges and get stiffness from doing this, and I'm afraid one day it may be much worse! Then, trying to get the barbell off my shoulders and over my head for up to 16 times...that's quite a feat, too! It probably looks almost comical toward the end of the workout, but I know it's dangerous.

I did a search on the internet for weighted vests, and there are soooo many. Do any of you have one that you like? I would really love your input if you do!

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi, Denise! The weight vest that I have (which I was able to find at a local SportMart mega-store for fitness and sporting goods equipment here in the Twin Cities) is made by All-Pro. It's a blue, tough-weave nylon vest that has 80 little pockets sewn into it, and it comes with 80 1/2-pound iron rods. Obviously, then, the max weight load of the vest is 40 pounds. What I also like about All-Pro's vest is that the rods encircle the bottom of the vest, AND go up the back of the vest, so that as you add rods / weight-load into these pockets, you can continually distribute the weight-load EVENLY (no small issue when you're trying to balance with barbell lunges).

All-Pro also makes a series of ankle weights with the same pocket-for-rod design, which you can get in variable max weight-loads (5 lb, 10 lb, and I think 20 lb PER ankle weight); I have a pair of the 10-lb-eachers.

JMHO - I'd be astonished if you couldn't find All-Pro's online.

I have a 20# (though I've only figured out how to load it with 19#!) weighted vest I ordered from Reebok (they had a free shipping special, which made it a good deal. I think they do the free shipping thing every few months). I like it because the weights you add aren't metal (and thus won't ever rust), but rather are some kind of cloth-encased rubber. The same vest is available elsewhere, without the Reebok logo on it.

OOOHH....OUCH Francine!!!

I think I will go with the ALL Pro Annette suggests. As I recall, that one is expensive enough. What a relief it will be to get that monster barbell off my shoulders (or dumbells. Those suckers can get so heavy that they actually bruise my collarbone for a few days...
Thanks for bringing this up Denise. I had entirely forgot I was going to ask for it for X-mas.

If there is any $$$ left after I get my TIMEX GPS Distance/Speed Calculator Watch.....

Can you tell I have quite the list???:):) Hey, I was good this year..........

(I always use the countdown stopwatch on the BTR and floor work to keep momentum up) I hope you get everything on your list! take care! PS did you figure out your profile icon yet?Your friend in fitness~~Francine

Thanks so much for the info!

Those babies are not cheap! But we're worth it, right? :) If Santa doesn't bring me one, this will most definitely be a "Merry Christmas to ME!" deal!

It will be so nice not to have to dread the all-out effort, physically and mentally, it takes me to get the heavy barbell over my head properly!

Thanks again!

Denise
