Hi Cynthia:
I have seen those at numerous fitness stores and sites too... I think you use it exactly the same way you would a BB, but I think they are limited at the weight you can buy, so... with that said, I found the following website that has LOTS of uses for them...
http://www.workoutz.com/search/search.php?search=1&query=weighted+bar
I think if you only had room for these rather than the standard BB and plates, they might be a bit easier, but you would have to have each incriment because they aren't adjustable... would make it a breeze to switch the loads though... just lean against the wall and grab another bar! I don't know if they come heavier than the 18 # as shown...
Body bars also come in 24, 30, 36 lbs. I have both 12 lb & 18 lb bars and I love them! They are great for upper body work when I want more stability than DBs (or need a smaller weight increment). I also use them for weighted floor work and standing leg lifts. I'd love to buy the heavier ones but online shipping is way too expensive and I can't find them in any stores.
In one of her workouts (APX?) Amy Bento just slips the handles of regular resistance tubing over the ends of her body bar to provide additional resistance. (you slide the resistance tubing handles in towards the center of the bar. That way your hands block the handles from sliding off.) It works great for bicep curls & overhead presses, for example.
I bought a 9 pound and 18 pounder at Dick's sporting goods, have you tried any major chain stores near you? I think I've seen them at other stores as well.
Hi I actually have some of the DVD's from the officially body bar. I really like the one that is called ENERGY ACTION CIRCUIT. It is a great cardio/strength interval training DVD when I want something different than Cathe, which isn't very often actually.
I wish I had some heavier ones as well for Cathe's Pyramid Style Lower Body. I love the workout but hate having to switch the weight on the BB so often, and I can never do it as fast as Cathe & the crew so I am constantly having to rewind & rewind.....
Check out the official body bar site though you can preview the DVD there www.bodybar.com
