weight training and fat loss in 40s

I'm 46 (will be 47 in August). I've noticed that I do best with more intense cardio sessions. I still do weight work but when I increase my cardio intensity my clothes fit better and I feel leaner. I am currently doing more kettlebell workouts and have seen a big difference overall. I added running which helped in my core area as well.

I try to eat about 85 to 90 percent healthy all the time. I indulge in the occasional piece of chocolate but try to save the "pig"fests for vacations.

Hey there ladies!

great feedback. Yes I am hypothyroid and have been on lowest dose of synthroid since 2005. Just last month my ob/gyn tested and increased my dosage! My regular MD said she would not have touched it "it was not that much off" well.. sorry miss skinny mini.. but I am the one with the weight gain!! hahahaha

I agree with changing up the workout. Hey.. my sis is visiting and we went to my golf club and did 1 hour of weighted kickbox, step, and concentrated weights. I have to say.. I am strong!! I used 5 pounds while the instructor used 3s and high high reps.

My plan.. going to a class OR using the gym weights once or twice week. I do so much at home but dont think I get my heart rate up.
Seriously.. I was on max incline on treadmill walking and went up to 130 a minute!!

I LOVE the idea of a group effort of clean eating!!! who's with us!?

I am eating fruit along with my veggies for past 2 days. I dont eat fruit. I would rather eat a bowl of broccoli. My thinking?? maybe it will be enough for a sweet tooth fix and will do away with any desire for carbs. Or not!!

So who wants to be accountable??

Hi Kathy G!!! I"M WITH YOU!!!!

What do you all say we start a 40's and over thread check-in? Sounds like fun.....

After the past few days reading all these posts, I've decided today is the day to cut out the "yuck" - I already work hard, I want to eat so much better. Not just through the week, but the weekend too!

So I'm with ya!!! I'll see you in the morning on the Check-in and Challenge forums!!!!

I'm excited:7 :7 :7 :7

I would totally be in to that. I am 42 and in the past year put on more than 10 pounds with no change in habits. I don't want to be emaciated, just lose some of the fat and look better in clothes.

Clare, that was a great reply you gave at the top of this thread. This serious serious situation we all have going on here is truly the "eighth wonder of the world"

I'm 43, gained 10lbs last year, cannot loose it!! I'm very short, so 10lbs on me is a lot! Depressess the hell outta me! I've got thunder thighs and hips!

I've tried the weight training less cardio, didn't work, more cardio and weight training, didn't work, cardio only ,nope, weight training only, nope.

So now, I am going to try longer cardio sessions about 3 times per week, and lots of reps of lower body work without a heavy weight, just heaps and heaps of the exercise. Still do some cardio each workout too.

Andrea.

Can I join this club??? 46 w/ a thin tire aroundthe middle, even doing 3-4 days/week of abs. Run 3x/wk, cathe tapes the other 3 days. 5'6" 135lbs. not over weight by any means, just the pudge around the middle... I find i'm not as flexible as I use to be, have a hard time w/ things like plyo jacks, the 4DS boot camp, can't step to save my life, you get the picture. I feel (know) it's my eating habits, love the chips, ice ceam, chocolate, etc. I have a low resistance when it comes to temptation. Any ideas? Kay

Hi Kay - come on over to our 40 and Over check-in at the Check-Ins and Challenge Forum!!! We'd be glad to have ya!:7

Hi IndyMom,

My favorites are Providence and Newport by Anthony Diluglio. You can get these at www.artofstrength.com. Also, The Extreme Kettlebell Workout by Keith Weber is very good. You can find this at www.dragondoor.com.

I also make my own workouts and do them outside. I combine kettlebell movements with jump rope, running and other cardio exercises. Another good resource is www.crossfit.com. I find lots of ideas there and tailor them to my level and what equipment I have.

HTH,

Hi Jane!

Thanks so much for the workout info. I will definitely be checking this out!

did you ladies find that you needed more weights and less cardio as you aged or more cardio to keep the weight off?

I'm 46 and I know what you mean.

Muscle endurance has worked for me -- but I need to get back to it again. I can lose fat, but I have to be much more diligent than before. I am constantly tweaking my food choices. My body says "no" to foods I've always eaten, but that's okay. I want to give it what it needs.

Where is the "40 check-in?"

Hi JumpHigher! We're over in the Check-ins & Challenges forum. We have a weekly check-in, posting daily! Come on over, we'd love for you to join us!!!:)

Jane,

I'm a fairly recent kettlebell convert, and they have done amazing things for my body! I'm 47 and look better than I ever have. For me it's a combination of eating extremely clean (hardly every cheat, and don't miss the crap I used to eat), intense cardio intervals, running, Cathe workouts, and kettlebells. I love Newport and the Keith Weber workouts. It's good to hear from a fellow kettlebeller.

Janet

Hi Janet,

I'm happy to hear from another kettlebeller! It seems like we have lots in common. I'm 46 but will be 47 in August. I do the exact same workouts as you do. Lots of intense cardio, Cathe workouts, running and of course kettlebells. I make up many of my workouts. I get lots of ideas from crossfit - (www.crossfit.com). I incorporate kettlebells as much as I can. Since I have been doing kettlebells more often I have seen so many changes.

Best of Luck to you and your workouts!!
