Weight loss Question :-)

With all this running I've been doing (training for a marathon) I've lost a ton of body fat. About 6% body fat gone!!! Yay!

But, I've only lost about 3 or 4 pounds!

What gives? I was hoping it would be more like 10! My diet has been pretty good too.

I even ran 15 miles yesterday! :(

I sure do feel good though.

Dani, Dani, Dani *shakes head in motherly fashion*

With all the reading you've done on this forum, you must be aware that THE SCALE LIES!!! In fact, it's possible that the scale is an invention of Satan himself, so that us poor, unsuspecting dopes here on Earth will look at it, shake our weary heads and say "gosh, I'd give just about ANYTHING to lose 10 lbs". And suddenly, in a flash of flame and lightning, there he is, rubbing his hands together in glee and chuckling to himself. "Anything, eh?", he says in a used car salesman kinda voice.... "Well, little lady, how about you just sign right here - no, no, no need to read the fine print, just your signature right there". And BOOM - one more soul gone. It happened to a friend of mine. True story.

The moral of this story is that the scale cannot be trusted as a true reflection of your body. 6% body fat is astounding and outstanding and I stand humbled before you. Who cares if it's only 3 or 4 lbs? Well, obviously you do, but you SHOULDN'T. You ran 15 miles. Good heavens girl, that's more than some people WALK in their lifetimes;)

Dani:

15 miles!! Whoa!! That is just great. I wish could run that distance. I'm just beginning to run. I think the fact that your body fat is down is the most important thing. It's much more significant that the body fat number go down rather than the numbers on the scale. I recently read that it is far more important to focus on your body fat percentage instead of your BMI (body mass index). This is because one could have a high BMI because they have more muscle mass instead of fat. I say you focus on your body fat going down; it's a great accomplishment. :)

Dani,

Congratulations on losing 6% body fat AND running 15 miles. If you don't mind me asking, how are you training for your marathon? My running is distance challenged and I am humbled by your accomplishment.

Tammy

Dani, that is so awesome!! I am very impressed. Congrats on the fat loss. I bet you are looking great. Good luck with your marathon, that is very admirable that you are training for one.

Congrats, Dani!!! WTG! :7 :7 :7

I am having my own issues with the scale...I have a new plan though that I will start putting into action tomorrow and hopefully this new plan will FORCE that dang scale to listen to me!!! :)

Hi Tammy! Thanks! I am following this training program and I am on week 11 right now. (Scroll to the bottom of this link) http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/Mar00novice.htm

I joined CARA (Chiago Area Runner's Association) to train for this marathon. http://www.cararuns.org/training_programs/marathontraining.html We meet once a week for the long run. Running these long runs with a group is so great. I really don't think I could run that far by myself. They keep me motivated to keep going. We all motivate eachother. It's great.

Dani....don't worry at all about the scale. I know that most marathon runners actually gain weight marathon training. I am odd and usually loose about 5 lbs! But the fact that your body fat has dropped so well is a sure indication you have gained muscle!!! Sometimes your appetite increases as the mileage increases....so as you watch what you eat...just continue and don't worry!! 15 miles is awesome...http://gifs.bestgraph.com/sports/athletisme/athletisme-02.gif[/img]...Carole

Carole, really?? Wow! Thanks for telling me that!!
They can gain weight during training? I wonder why. That makes me feel SO much better. I thought I was supposed to be losing all this weight running so much. I'm working SO hard!

Thank you! http://www.chittielounge.com/board/images/smiles/hug.gif

Good God! 6% body fat?!!! That is a ginormous amount of body fat to lose. Silly girl! Throw out that obnoxious scale. 6% body fat is an awesome number!!!! No small potatoes!

"My diet has been pretty good too." To me this is the key phase in your post. Are you keeping a food journal? Even if you "eat clean," a phrase I see so often on these forums, you still may be eating too much.

Just Do It! :)

Congratulations on 15 miles--doesn't it feel great! When I ran a marathon a few years back, I remember feeling amazed at how long I could go!

What I experienced weight-wise might give you some encouragement--I, too, thought I would lose a lot of weight with all the running, but my weight pretty much stayed the same. AFTER the marathon, however, I lost about 5 pounds --I think I automatically ate less carbs when I wasn't preparing to run 15-20 miles at a pop, and when I was able to cross-train again (kickbox, circuit train, bike, IMAXes), which was hard for me to fit in with all the running, I lost a few pounds.

So, just remember that what you are training for now is an incredible feat--enjoy every minute of it, esp. the race (just keep telling yourself during the race that when it's over, you'll never be running your first marathon ever again!), and after the marathon, when you can do more Cathe tapes and perhaps stay away from carbs at night, you might see that dreaded scale budge!

Dani 15 miles is excellent!!! That is such a great accomplishment!
Scales are not our friends! Please don't pay attention to that. You lost your body fat and I am almost certain you are seeing results in your body.

We ban scales here!!!

Keep it up!

Thank you everyone!

Honeybunch, you may be right. Looks like I'm going to have to start using my FitDay software again to journalize. :)

I also read just now that you shouldn't weigh yourself until the day before your long run. Because, right after the long run your muscles are recuperating and filled with water. Hmmmm...Interesting.

Way to go Dani!! Sounds like you are doing a great job to me! I hate those scales, they always tell me I have a high bady fat %. I don't think it can be right. Keep with the excellant work! :)
