Weight loss question

Cathlete
Hi I saw a post here on Cholestrol and wanted to see if you all could help me with a question.

I have a genetic kidney disorder, I wondered if this effects the fact that it takes me (and has done in the past) a long time to lose significant weight (the current medication I am on has a high quantity of sodium). This means that I have to drink at least 2 litres of water/liquid a day (something I don't always do).

I just wondered since you are such an educated bunch if you had any ideas (I am due to see my consultant later this month but every time I go for a check up I forget to ask him).

My son has kidney problems too - could you please be more specific about your problem? His kidneys cannot retain sodium so I have to salt all of his food and make sure he gets enough to drink because he also does not concentrate his urine. His kidneys constantly make urine whether he is drinking a lot or not - he becomes dehydrated very easily.

He is quite young so obviously isn't trying to lose weight but I have learned a little about kidneys since he was born - I am hoping I can help you out if I know a little more.

Just sitting here thinking, though, I don't think kidneys have a whole lot to do with weight loss. I do believe that you could be retaining water, though. His tummy always looks bloated but that is because if his intolerance to potassium and phosphorus - another function of the kidneys.

I think I am muddying the waters here. I think it would be best to talk to your nephrologist. My son has a nutritionist that specializes in nephrology - it would be a very good idea to talk to someone who can tell you specifically what you can eat and how to lose weight. Kidneys have so many different functions and I don't want to give you advice that would be bad for you!

Hiya

:-jumpy Thanks for the reply I wasn't really expecting one I thought my question might be too specialized.

My problem is that I produce kidney stones all the time (known as Renal Tubular Acidosis via calicum. I also loss calicum which forms the stones in my kidneys). I have to drink lots of water watch my potasium levels and iron.

I would love to speak to a nutritionist that specializes in nephrology to get some ideas I have been told to cut down on the meat in my diet the suggestion given is that I have two veggie days.

However my doctors main concern is that my kidneys function a few years ago I came close to kidney failure (also there is a danger is the toxicity levels in my urine will be too high, and also there is the danger of kidney failure). Although they are concern with my weight they are more concerned with my kidney function.

I too am bloated due to the sodium I have to take and the water that I have to drink.

I would love to be able to contact a qualified nutritionist (I have never heard of one in the UK)to swop some ideas.

Does this help? If you want anymore information I will get back to you.

Well, my son does not have to watch his iron but is very restricted in the dairy area - no cheese, yogurt, sour cream etc and is only allowed to have a certain amount of milk because these are very high in potassium. He may not eat bananas, potatoes, tomatoes or oranges (or orange juice) because they are also very high in potassium. Most veggies have a lot of potassium - be careful what you eat on your veggie days.

My son's nutritionist is located in the Children's Hospital in Detroit, MI. If you don't mind the long-distance call I can e-mail you her number - I don't really know how much she can help you as she won't have your chart but if you have a nephrologist in the UK they may know of someone you can contact there. I do think it is very important that you talk to someone who knows what they are doing. I'm really not qualified to give you advice.

I have a list of foods to avoid for kidney problems and a list of foods that are okay that the nutritionist sent me also - let me know if you want me to send you that list also.
