weight gain first trimester

Did any of you gain weight in the first trimester? If so, do you feel like you were eating poorly? I mentioned in a different post that I feel like I have been eating a lot. Mostly, but not always healthy or low fat. I'm afraid it has caught up with me. I think I gained two pounds. My scale is hard to read. I am at week 12 (counting from 1st day of last period and I have 35 day cycles.) It's got to be fat right? I mean how much baby or placenta or fluid can there be already?? Maybe I just need some reassurance. Thanks, Gina (p.s. I just reread this and it sounds so lame. Two pounds, big deal. But why do I feel so terrible?)

I just read this at am-i-pregnant.com:

"During the first three months you will probably gain approximately 2-4lbs. Of this, only 1.7oz will be your baby. The rest is made up of the baby's support system (amniotic fluid and placenta), your enlarged uterus and breasts and your increased blood volume. "

I feel a little better. But, my breasts haven't changed a bit. It ain't that. You all can still reassure me I am not gaining unnecessary body fat (written with a rather sheepish look on my face).

You are NOT gaining too much weight too fast! Trust me, I gained 10 pounds my first trimester. I felt the same way you do. I found the first trimester hard because you have to accept that you no longer have control of your own body. I'm someone who really loves to eat salads, vegetables and fruit - but in my first trimester I couldn't stand to look at them. All I wanted was fried foods! The thought of a salad made me sick! That went away after the first trimester.
It's actually great when you start to show, that's when I knew this extra weight had a purpose! I really think the first trimester can be tough emotionally, especially if you're someone who likes to workout. It was hard for me at first to see my body change. It will get better! Just keep being good to yourself and it will all work out!

You're right - 2 pounds is nothing! I gained about 5 in my first trimester, and 12 by the time I was 16 weeks pregnant! Unfortunately, I also failed my glucose tolerance test so was then put on a very strict gestational diabetes diet and ended up only gaining about 21 pounds, all of which I lost by about 3 weeks post partum. The gestational diabetes probably won't be an issue for you, I'm only mentioning that because of the diet and to let you know that what happens in the first trimester doesn't necessarily have anyhthing to do with what happens the rest of the pregnancy. It's a lot easier to eat healthy foods after the first trimester in my opinion, and your energy level is better so working out is easier too.

Anyway, my biggest regret about my pregnancy was that I couldn't enjoy it more because of the fear of gaining massive amounts of weight that I couldn't take off. I know it's easier said than done, but relax and enjoy the right to put on a few pounds. You'll lose whatever you gain in no time with your healthy habits.

Take care,
Dana

Hi Gina,

Sounds to me like you are right on target at 2lbs for a "healthy gain" according to the guidelines you have stated for the first tri. I gained 7lbs in the first trimester, and so far have gained a total of 21lbs (now almost 30 weeks). Like you, I suddenly became anxious that I was gaining too much, so I can certainly relate to that sudden feeling of being out of control!

Your body will naturally start to lay down some body fat now in preparation for feeding your baby when he/she arrives. This will happen regardless as to whether you end up breast-feeding or not, and it is Mother Nature's way of ensuring you have the means of sustaining your baby.

I would say you have absolutely nothing to worry about - it sounds like you are doing a great job of looking after yourself and bump, eating healthily and exercising, which are the two best things you can do for your body (as well as resting, of course, LOL!).

Take care!

Kaz.

yep... both times...

I gained 8-9 lbs. in the 1st trimester... slowed down considerably in the 2nd trimester... and then gained a bunch at the end.

Weight gain is no fun, but it is part of growing a new human being. You have increased blood supply, water gain, growing uterus, placenta, amniotic fluid, baby... and, yes, it is normal for your body to soften during pregnancy (this in itself won't cause weight gain, but it can alter a woman's self image). Be good to yourself... do what you can to be healthy, and beyond that, try not to worry about the weight. If you are exercising, it'll come off easily on the other end.

hi! I'm certainly glad I read this post. I'm 11 weeks and have gained about 5 to 7 lbs (depending on the time of day). I'm actually making sure I eat really healthy, haven't increased my calories (yet) and exercising 7 days a week!!! I think our bodies do what they want to do. I'm glad to read I'm not the only one who gained more than the guilt-creating, "What to Expect When Your Expecting's" recommended first trimester gain of 3 lbs!

Very commendable that you are eating healthy. I do mostly. And it is reassuring to hear that despite this, you have still gained. It is evidence that I shouldn't necessarily blame myself. -- Gina

Thank you everyone! You have made me feel better or more tolerant of the extra weight. Don't ya' just love this forum? --Gina
