Weight for Squats?

I was wondering if anyone knew how much is too much weight to lift over your head when doing a squat. I usually squat with 40 lbs and I would like to increase this weight for the STS, but I am not sure how much weight I can safely squat with without using a squat rack. I appreciate anyone's feedback.

Thanks,
Weezy

I think that depends on your own personal strength, I just make sure the weight is not so heavy that I would not be able to get it off my shoulders again, for me, my max on a strong day is 65 pounds to hoist over my head, but I feel safer with 55/60. I'll be using a weighted vest to increase the pounds, I have the Cathe 10 pound vest, and have just ordered a 40 pound vest.

weight vest

I was wondering what to do about this too (I can safely lift 35-40lbs)... do you mind sharing which 40 lb vest you got Dela (and maybe where you got it and the price)? I am going to call a local sporting goods store near me to see if they have one... I want to be able to wash it too as I imagine it's going to get pretty icky throughout STS! I've only watched the first two discs and haven't even seen the legs workouts yet but I can only imagine that they are going to be very sweat-inducing! LOL!

Thanks!

Sure, I bought a "cheaper" one than others recommended, since I will only be doing it for leg work, I did not want to spend too much, if I was using it for cardio work, I would have considered a more durable one.

I bought mine online at sportsauthority.com, it's the TKO 40 pound vest, it was $130 I think, and I had a $25 coupon, but this is weird, I just went back to the site and it's not there anymore. And I just checked Amazon for the GoFit one, and it was a great price before at $85, now it's up to $99 and out of stock, the only one in stock is $119, but it got terrible reviews. There must have been a run on these things after everyone got their STS!

The other cheaper ones I found were by Valeo:

And GoFit: (although it is now not nearly as cheap as before)

It's individual, depending on your strength.
If you are struggling at all or using body English to get the bar over your head, you are putting your shoulders at risk, and should put your weight limit lower.

I like to stick with 40-45# (depends on how I'm feeling that day) and add weight to that using a weighted vest (or, if I really want to go heavy, I'll do some sets on my Soloflex Rockit,. which will definitely need to be dusted off for STS!).

Mir Vest

I bought a 40# Mir vest from Amazon. It's the shorter one so it won't affect me when I bend to do the squats. It was kind of expensive as was the shipping. But, I too can go heavy but I can't lift 65 - 75# over my head...at least not very often!
