Weighing Food

Good Morning
Are you suppose to go by the weight before you cook it or after. I noticed that when I cooked my turkey meat it weighs more before I cook it and less afterwards so which do I go by????

The weights are different. Usually the calorie count listed will be for either cooked or raw. If the calorie listing is for cooked, weigh it after its been cooked. If it is for raw, weigh it before its cooked. I usually weigh it raw.

It is confusing!

Especially when most of the online calorie calculator sites are inconsistent. For example at Sparkspeople I've noticed the same caloric values given to 4 oz of raw chicken as 4oz cooked chicken. What is more frustrating is when raw or cooked is not specified. Who can you trust? Well - the USDA has a library of nutritional values that is reliable. I may be wrong, but I believe Cathe's nutrition software uses the data from the USDA. (http://cathe.com/workout/)

Foods List

Here is the run down on Turkey Breast, meat only, raw:
Show Foods

3 oz raw or 87g = 97k
4 oz raw or 113g = 124k
5 oz raw or 142g= 158k

Now let's look at Turkey Breast, meat only, cooked:
Show Foods

3 oz cooked or 87g = 117k
4 oz cooked or 113g = 156k
5 oz cooked or 142g = 192k

Okay - do you see what I see? 4 oz raw is almost the same as 3 oz cooked, and 5 oz raw is just about 4 oz cooked.

Does this help?

:D
