Wedding outfit question

Okay, I'm clueless at this stuff. I'm going to a wedding in July, and I have a fabulous dress to wear, but I don't think it's an appropriate dress to wear to the church. Is it okay to wear one afternoon-ish kinda outfit to the church and then change into a more evening-ish kinda outfit for the reception?

The dress I want to wear to the reception is black and beaded, so I don't think that just wearing a shawl or jacket would even work.

Well Stacy London I'm not, but I think it's fine to change your clothes after the church service. I've been to several weddings in the past couple of years where the ceremony was held in the late morning or early afternoon and the reception was in the evening, so everybody changed their clothes. I think you'll be fine Shells;) . Can you post a picture of the beaded dress? It would help if we could see it.
 
Thanks Michele. I'm notorious for showing up to things dressed completely inappropriately and I'd rather not do that this time.

I can't post a pic of the dress because I don't have it yet. I'm borrowing it from Becky, who is sending it to me tomorrow. I'm cheap and this way I don't have a to buy a fancy dress I won't ever wear again;) I will, however, buy some strappy high heels to wear with it. And I'm going to carry one of my Mom's evening clutches:)
 
I agree with Michele and know you'll be bee-u-tee-ful.

BTW, I no longer have to go to the out of town family wedding Saturday. *happy dance* Just thought I'd throw that in since it is sort of on topic.;-)

I've seen lots of women wear more casual outfits to the church such as pant suits, skirts & blouses, etc., then change into their formal dresses
later.
 
There are lots of folks who wear an appropriate outfit to the Church and then change as to "snazz it up" for the reception! My mom did that at MY wedding! Only her top but still! It's perfectly fine!:)
 
You know, I have never thought about this. When I go to a wedding, I wear an outfit I probably wouldn't wear to church. At the last wedding I went to, I wore a black halter top with white capris from Express. I never even thought about if it would be appropriate in the church part of the wedding. Oops....my bad...

On another note, at this same wedding, I saw people wearing strapless black dresses and more evening "going out" type clothes. I would suggest trying on the outfit and see how comfortable you feel about it. But, then again, I wore a black halter top to a wedding so my advice may not be very accurate :).

It's perfectly acceptable.
We do it here all the time. I don't feel comfortable showing "skin" (meaning too much of it) during the wedding ceremony, but I always change for the reception.

oh, YAY! I LOVE the super trashy look at weddings :p Will there be table dancing involved? If you're wearing platforms, I think it's a must.

Well, I'm just going to wear that to the church. Maybe I could do some pew dancing (*sits back and hopes not to get flamed*).
 
Do you have any dressy summer coats that you could put over it, or could you buy one? Here (UK) I see lots of people at the church with a dressy, coordinating jacket or coat over their dress, then they take the jacket/coat off for the reception. Maybe a silk or satin trench or swing coat?

I think changing if fine. I would love to see a picture of you all gussied up. I mean the beaded dress, not the tube top church outfit. Hey, what will your butt say in the church outfit?

At my wedding everyone wore different outfits to church and
more dressy (new year party type) to the wedding.
