Wedding Dress Dilemma

Cathlete
I have a problem -- I am getting married in May, and I have bought a dress. But I am not sure if it is "the one."

The first time I went shopping, I fell in love with a dress that turned out to be $1400. I can't justify spending that much on a wedding dress. So I kept looking....

I went to David's Bridal and ended up buying a dress that I love very much, it's a very pretty dress, cost $400. But I have to admit that I have been on the fence about it since day one.

Now David's has come out with a new line of dresses, one of which looks almost identical to the $1400 dress, and of course it is only about $500. I feel like I need to try it on...

I feel like I should ABSOLUTELY LOVE my wedding dress. Will they take the other one back if I change my mind? I am also worried about having to order and getting the dress in in time.

If you were in my position, what would you do??

It can't hurt to call David's and ask if you can return the first dress you bought. Assuming it's unaltered and ofcourse it has not been worn ;) they may give you a store credit atleast which would be perfect to buy that other dress with if you like. Perhaps if you explain to them flat out your dilemma it may help as they are making the $$$ no matter what!

I would NOT, however, go try that new dress on until you know your options with the dress you purchased. If David's will not do anything for you then I would stay far far away from there for as long as possible so that you are not tempted!

Ofcourse...$900 for TWO dresses is still a much better deal then paying $1400 for one! Did I just say that!?! LOL

Katie,
I agree with Wendy. I would be surprised if you told your story to David's Bridal and they didn't give you store credit! And yes, even $900. is not alot for a bridal gown. You could alway sell the original dress at a consignment shop.
Good Luck. I hope you get the dress you want!

Katie, I don't have an answer, but I just want to say Bravo! to you. I see more and more women buying wedding dresses for prices between $300-$500 and I think it really sends the right message to the dress companies and the whole Wedding Machine in general. Paying $2000+ for a wedding dress is just silly, and it's about time women just said NO to being pressured into it. Good for you!! (And I'm sure whichever dress you choose, you'll look awesome!).

Wendy's advice is really excellent.

I just wanted to say that back in '99 I got my wedding dress for $400 (also at David's Bridal, I think). At the time there was a dress I loved even more for $650 (still not bad for a wedding dress, but my mom was buying it and she was a poor assistant professor at the time) so I decided to save my mom the $250 and went with my second choice. I admit that sometimes I still think about that first dress, but I don't really regret the decision and I didn't think about it at all on my wedding day. I even got comments about how much I must have paid for my beautiful dress, so it worked out well. Just keep in mind the marriage will overshadow the wedding (eventually). I have had such a great time since getting married that I rarely think about the wedding now (I've even gotten over the silly hairdo).

OK, I'm going to have to include a picture to show you the Shirley Temple hair.

I would think that as long as you haven't had any alterations done on the original dress, they may give you store credit for it.
Everyone told me when I got married that I would KNOW my dress when I saw it.

They were right.

And it sounds like you're going through the same thing.
I think you should try to get what you want. Good luck!

"Whatever dress you get, just don't let them do this to your hair!"

Lainie! You are so funny!!!!
:+

I liked your hair!
:D

I would go to David's and try it on. Take it from me - I bought 3 wedding dresses before I had one I loved. ;)

I was able to sell the others on eBay, so I didn't have to take a huge loss.

THANK YOU THANK YOU all so much for your advice!

My mom, who purchased the dress, is PISSED. But I'm the one who has to wear it!

I have called David's, and a manager is going to call me back. I will keep you all posted!

Thanks again for your advice!

Girl it's your day so get the dress that you love. They may exchange the $400 dress for the $500 dress if alterations have not been done. If they do not just buy the $500 dress and sell the other one on Ebay.
:) ;-)

Oh, get the dress you want! I did, and wound up having a tailor cut it into a 'party dress" I can wear whenever I want!:7 And yes, my darling DH wore JEANS to our wedding which took place in our home in SLC 4 years ago.And yeah, I wore a tiara}( and had hair extensions.oh boy.

When I tried it on, I knew right away this was it... although mine cost 650.00 not 1,400, but still, its your day!

Lainie, I think you look amazing:)

I tried on a gorgeous dress at a bridal salon that was $2100, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that. I found a dress at DB that I liked just as much for ~$700 (getting married 3/15). DB sold me the bra and slip to go with my dress, which weren't cheap (~$120 or so). When I went to my seamstress for the first fitting, she told me I didn't need either the bra or slip (she is sewing cups into the dress and she said the slip makes the dress too big and puffy). Anyhow, I returned the items to DB. They wouldn't give me my money back, but they did give me store credit, which I used to purchase my flower girl's dress and shoes. So hopefully they will allow you to exchange it.

On a side note, I saw the new dresses that came out from DB a couple of weeks ago. I was paranoid I was going to find one that I liked better! But fortunately didn't see any that really caught my eye. Plus, I know that the dresses I like in the photos aren't necessarily the ones I liked on me.

Lainie, LMAO!!!!

Nancy, you would be extra-proud of me: $105 for my wedding dress, on clearance, after 10% off for a small hole in the sleeve that my MIL fixed for me. (Granted this was 15 years ago.) My mom was also paying for my dress on a limited budget. I was thrilled to find a dress that I loved, that looked good on me, and that also didn't have to be arranged for every picture. My SIL made the headpiece.
