waste of time

So I've really taken a liking to ellen barrett workouts. I love the fluidity of the workouts. However, I can't help but feel like the hour is wasted by not doing heavier weight work. All you read is how light weights do nothing for the body and one should lift heavier to shape a muscle. So I wanted to know others opinions on this matter. I'm really not into lifting anymore and prefer yoga, pilates, cardio infused workouts instead. Am I wasting my time?

I worried about the same thing when I started concentrating more on fusion style workouts last Sept. It really depends on what your goals are I would think. I got tired of constantly going "heavier", working to "exhaustion" and just wanted to feel strong and flexible. Since changing my routines I have slimmed down in my arms and legs and waistline---my clothes fit much better. I have not gained any weight at all. I have lost some strength but not as much as I had feared. My cardio endurance is less but I am not planning on running any marathons and my joints are in good shape--no knee or hip problems. I think the important point is focusing on what YOUR goals are and working towards them. I have recently read 2 articles about 2 different women who are both in their mid to late seventies and both writers mentioned what great shape these women were in for any age. They both do power yoga--one attends classes and the other is an instructor. One other point is that people who have met Ellen Barrett have commented on how great she looks in person. They mentioned that she is slim with good muscle definition. I still enjoy weight training but not as often. I find that I have gotten away from alternating cardio and strength days and most days include some cardio and fusion workouts. Right now I feel that this is working for me and maybe it will change again but right now I am comfortable with what I am doing.

I am not familiar with the particular work outs you are talking about but I must say that I love love love high rep/low weight lifting for leaning/defining/sculpting muscle. Moderate/heavy weight lifting has it's place but it just will not achieve the same goal (atleast for me) as the real endurance style weight work outs. This being said, I don't buy it when people say it's a waste of time if you aren't going heavy. It's most certainly NOT a waste as long as you are doing an adequate number of reps with that light weight! If you are feeling the burn then you are doing something right!!!!

JMHO tho! :)

Thank you both for your responses. As I have gotten older my thoughts of health and fitness have changed. I no longer enjoy severe DOMS and total exhaustion at the end of a workout. All of these barre/pilates/yoga workouts make me feel so good.

Another workout I have been enjoying is Michael Olajide's AeroBarre---a combo of boxing and ballet. Sounds crazy but it is really great and the time flies by.
