My name is nita ferguson and I am 47 years old, newly divorced and lost my job 2years ago and have been struggling to make it, however, I am starting a new job next week and am excited. My life has been on a downward spiral and ia now moving upward. I want a new body and was referred to you by my sister who lives in Tulsa, Ok.. She is newly divorced as I am and bought your tape and is really getting in shape. She was giving me some advice on what types of workout I need and I am confused as to what I need to start out with. I need to tone up and lose weight. I heard that weight bearing exercises are good along with pilates and stretches and aerobics. How do I get all of these workouts and get what I need without having to do so many different ones.I would like to get into some weight lifting exercises because I heard that they were a fast way to sculpt and tone plus they build muscles that burn more calories even while you sleep. I also heard that you have to have areobics and stretching. Please help me to get started the right way so I can schedule my routines to work with my new job coming up. Please help me to get on track.

Hi Nita,

Congratulations on the new job and welcome!

My advice is to start slowly, incorporating exercise as part of your daily routine. I would start out with a simple schedule of alternating a total body weight lifting day, with a cardio day. Or cardio/upper one day, cardio/lower the next (abs can be worked everyday) A rule of thumb is not to weight train the same body part two days in a row. Cardio can be simply taking a long, brisk walk if you want. Do this routine six days a week and then on the seventh do some stretching, yoga, or just take a day off. Pilates is not for everyone, but it certainly is an alternate form of exercise that has its merits. Some do it in lieu of weight training for abs and lower body. (Pilates enthusiasts chime in here!)

Cathe has Basic Step and Body Fusion that sounds perfect for you. It has step two step aerobic workouts plus upper, lower, and ab toning. You'll have to get a step, some dumbbells, and tubing for this one. I have found if you want to put off getting a stability ball, most of the ab exercises can be modified. From there, you have a wealth of workouts to choose from and you'll have a better idea of how you want to refine your workouts.

Hope I've helped, I tried to keep it simple, because I know it can be overwelming. The key is to get started!

Hi, I would also recommend Cathe's CTX series for a beginner. These come as a set of six workouts that you can rotate on a daily basis. Each tape comes with a differnt type of cardio workout (step, kickbox, circuit with step, mixtures ) and about 10-15 minutes of strenght training for a specific body part (triceps, chest, back etc. There is also a leg and butt only workout. You can chosse to split workouits up so that you can do cardio only several times a week but still the do the strentgh training workout or vice versa. IMHO, the cardio workouts are less intense than her other ones such as are found in the Intensity or Body Blast series. Good luck.
