Vitamix vs. Juicer question

Can anyone explain to me exactly what the Vitamix does? I've been thinking of getting a juicer, but then noticed that some of you recommend a Vitamix instead. Just curious how to justify the extra $$$, and what the differences/benefits are to the Vitamix. Thanks in advance for any advice!:D

I have a vitamix and would love to have a good juicer also. I have an old oster from years ago and use it for carrot juice. My understanding is a juicer extracts the plup and the vitamix grinds up everything so it would be hard to get good carrot juice without it being really thick. I do use my vitamix a lot more than my juicer though. Made some humus yesterday with it and can't be beat for smoothies.

A Vitamix blends up fruits and veggies into smoothies, keeping the fiber (a juicer separates juice and fiber).

A Vitamix can also grind nuts or grains, blend up nuts into nut butters or substitutes for dairy ('sour cream', 'mayonaise', etc.), make juice (if you strain the blended up ingredients through a nut-milk bag), make nut milk (blend up nuts and water and strain through a nut-milk bag), blend things into a creamy consistency, make frozen treats (just by blending frozen fruits or juice and ice).

A juicer makes juice. The non-centrifugal juicers can also make nut butters and applesauce and doughs by running the ingredients through using a special blank.

I think both smoothies/green drinks and juice are useful, but consider juices more as nutritional supplements to be taken in limited quantities, while green drinks are actual foods. And since you can make juice with a vitamix (by straining), if you want to get only one, I'd go with the Vitamix (I use my Vitamix at least once a day, but my juicer very rarely, though I intend to use it more often). It really depends on what you want to do: juice only, or many other things?

Dania: I wanted to get back to you, since I just tried my Vitamix as a "juicer" for the first time. I blended up all the ingredients for my juice, then strained it using a nutmilk bag. Juice making and cleanup took much less time than doing it with a juicer, and the juice ended up just like it would if I had juiced it.

My recommendation (if you are still looking at both of these options) would be to buy a Vitamix and a nut milk bag. That would give you the option of making whole-food smoothies/ green drinks or juice (by straining). "Milking" the bag for juice is also a somewhat meditative experience, LOL!

Thank you so much Kathryn! I am totally sold on the Vitamix. I have not heard one bad thing about them. As soon as I save up the money, I'm getting one. My brother-in-law just ordered a juicer from Jack LaLanne, and he hated it and is sending it back, and that was actually the juicer I was thinking of getting because they had a special on them. So glad I didn't order one. Besides, I think you're right - the versatility of the Vitamix will better suit me. It also sounds like a great way to get my 4 year old to eat his veggies. Thanks for your help!:D
