Sorry you are having such bad luck, Anne.

My mom swears by Maytag. Had her washer w/little troubles for 20+ years before she replaced it with a new Maytag washer. STILL has the old dryer and it's got to be 25 years old by now! Still runs great with a few minor repairs.

I purchased a Maytag stackable washer/dryer about 4 years ago when I moved into my house. It's never given me trouble. (knock on wood) It was more expensive then other brands but I spent the $$$ because of the reputation Maytag has. I don't know anything about thier other appliances though as my mom and I both only ever had washer/dryers made by them.

(((HUGS))) and good appliance fixing vibes are being sent your way! I gather you will never buy Maytag again, huh?

Sounds like us with GE. We bought a GE gas stove 3 years ago and it never worked right from day one. To get the stove to heat up, you had to put the top burner on until it preheated. Then last month it had an internal electrical fire. My husband went online to see if he could find a way to fix it and there is a class action suit on the same exact model. Everyone had the same problems we did and the ones that fixed it ended up having fires again later. We just bought a Frigidaire stove and had the old one taken to the dump. I'll never purchase GE again. Don't even get me started on their help line. Not only did I spend major amounts of time trying to get a real person, but when I did, they barely spoke English.

I don't know. I have a cousin who is one of the fabled Maytag repair men. He laughs at the image and says he has to go out to repair Maytag's products more than any other. He says Whirlpool and GE are better - but even those have problems.

No brand can be with out fault I guess. You know, things are not made the way they used to be. I'm sure my mom's old Maytag washer/dryer are far superior in quality to anything they make today! Prices went up and quality went down. That's the way it goes unfortunately...

That's so true about things not being made to last. We need a new dishwasher and when we went shopping, the salesperson said that the new models are only meant to last 7 years tops, that is unless you buy a European model. Say's a lot about our society.

I don't know about Maytag. I would never buy a GE again knowing what I know now about how conveniently they pollute the environment with carcinogens and take job overseas.

Actually, the best ranked appliances are Kenmore (Sears brand) followed closely by Whirlpool. I know this because I had to buy a new w/d this weekend. :) I had a Whirlpool set that lasted 15 years and multiple moves (also a flood last year that included 1.5 feet of water in the basement). So I was pretty sure I wanted Whirlpool (and that's what I bought). I bought the front-loading set primarily because I wanted the washer - it can do 20 towels at one time!! I can't wait until it's here so that I can do every blanket in the house, lol.

The issue with Maytag right now is they were bought by GE. I imagine the first couple of years of products are iffy in any merger like that.

Anyway, sorry for your pain!!

Marie

Maytag Gemini!!!! We just bought one! (loved the idea of a double oven, and a friend has one) It hasn't even been delivered yet. What problems have you been having? Ours is gas.

(Hmmm...I insisted on buying the extended warranty even though DH didn't want to...am I going to be glad that I did?)

Maytag was bought by another company (maybe whirlpool) and is no longer what it used to be. In fact, whirlpool (or whoever the company is) deliberatly dropped the quality of Maytag appliances, so their own name brand would appear better. This was told to me by 2 salesmen at different stores when I recently bought a new washer.

My gemeni is electric. The 1st time the oven lights didn't work . then the bottom oven burner...
From what i found online. Whirlpool bought Maytag..
Why is it they only break on holidays????
The frige , under a year the freezer fan died, now the compressor..
Find out today if they are able to fix it today or wait..

Anne- I have a Maytag fridge that SUCKS! The first few years, we went through the ice machine nightmares (good thing I bought the warranty, which I don't normally do). Turned out they did a recall on the ice machines and we got a replacement. Also, the crispers are always empty because everything freezes in them. So, I am basically only useing half of the fridge. I'll never buy another Maytag fridge. I have a Maytag Gas Oven that is wonderful though. I'd check to see if there are any recalls on the compressor. If not, I'd probably buy a new fridge and use the old one as a spare garage/salon fridge if you decide to fix it. Wouldn't you know that this all happens on a Holiday and at Tax time! Dang!

Funny how this thread came up. I have a Maytag dishwasher that I've had for about a year. None of the control buttons work, except the "delay" button. Instead of delaying the start time, it starts the dishwasher. So I can get my dishes washed, at least. I'm going to have to dig out the paperwork and see exactly when I bought it and if it's still under warranty.

Didn't buy the extended warranty. All the consumer guides say not to bother because of the markup. Now, I'm not so sure...

Marie, this is consistent with my research as well. Consumer Reports has been rating Whirlpool and Kenmore products at the top for years now.

We bought a Maytag dishwasher about 5 or 6 years ago, way before it was bought out by Whirlpool, and it's a piece of crap. You should see it -- the finish wore off of the handle -- it just bubbled up and peeled off, and it doesn't do a great job cleaning the dishes, either.

Whirlpool didn't take over Maytag until about a year ago, but their ratings have been falling for several years now. Back 14 or 15 years ago, when we purchased our current washer and dryer, Whirlpool and Kenmore products topped the ratings.

Hmm. The Maytag repairman is coming to my house today as a matter of fact to fix my dishwasher. There is a recall on it - the part that moves the liquid rinse agent can supposedly start a fire. Appliances are definately not built like they used to be. It's done on purpose I'm sure, so that consumers have to keep on consuming. And we do! :-(

Do they also own Frigidaire, because I have a piece of...... dishwasher that hasn't clean dishes since day one. They say nothing is wrong with it. Get this, they don't give a satisfaction guarentee, just a warranty on parts! Wrote a letter. Will never buy a Frigidaire applaince again, mostly because of the way they treated me. Recently bought a Fisher Paykel washer and drier. They are the bomb! The dryer dries clothes faster than the washer washes them. It also uses high air flow and lower heat so its easier on clothes. Came with a higher price tag, but also came with a 5 year warrenty.
(Can't spell warrenty to save my life tonight. Doesn't look right, but I am drawing a blank!)

I will never buy another maytag! I bought a washer, because I thought they were a good product but it quit working just within the warranty period,I got lucky. No more maytag for me!!
Penny

I also have a Maytag refrigerator that we've had nothing but problems with. It has been demoted to the spare frig we keep in the basement. We bought a GE for the kitchen and haven't had any problems with it but we like the layout of the Maytag better. I don't think I'll ever be without a spare frig again b/c they don't build them to last and I can't be without a frig.
