Speaking of the barbell, I have noticed that from holding the barbell on my upper back/shoulders/base of neck for my Cathe workouts, I have developed large muscles in that area (I think it is called the trapezius?). I went to the gym the other day and was doing squats on a Smith machine holding the barbell w/ pad on my shoulder/upper back/base of neck facing a mirror. I noticed in the mirror that I have huge muscles in that area. I think it is cool, but the lady I was with made a comment about my "big neck muscles." In any case, I rarely have neck/shoulder/upper back pain. So, I think this is a tangential benefit to using a barbell.
