Update

Lois, I am so sorry! My heart, prayers and hugs go out to you and your family. I bet that your father was a great man and that he is proud of his family and grandkids. You are a helpful and fun poster and human being, and definately are a tribute to him.

Lois ~

I am so sorry for your loss...I am praying for your family. <<<HUG>>>

In the midst of your sorrow, thank you for the reminder re: skin checks. I was shocked to find a small (but new) mole I had removed two years ago was indeed, melanoma. I had a surgical excision wider and deeper than the original mole and no other melanoma cells were found so the biopsy stopped there. I have had two subsequent dermatological checks six months apart. The first dermatologist took a very conservative approach. At the outset of my second appointment, I intended to ask the dr. if we could spread the "checks" out to once every 12 months. Much to my surprise, I never was able to ask the question. He took a much more aggressive approach to melanoma and recommended that I come back in 3 months and he also scheduled a consultation w/ an oncologist (!). I've toyed around with cancelling that appointment (it's this month).... I have no new or changed moles, I feel great (all the stock arguments we use to talk ourselves out of keeping dr. appointments). After reading your post, I've decided to keep my appointment. ...you just never know.

Thank you for thinking of others during your time of grief. My heart aches for you.

Hi, Lois!
I'm so sorry about your father. I've been there, so I know how hard it is. My father died of cancer (colon cancer, which had spread) 16 years ago, and I still miss him.

I must say I'm a bit paranoid about skin cancer, being of a "fish-belly-pale" complexion, with hints of red (moreso when I was young) in my hair.

I had what I (but not my doctor) considered to be a suspicious mole (itchy at times, looking like it changed shape, and not even there 8 years ago!) removed from my back this summer. Left a not-so-nice round spot a bit smaller than the size of a dime, but was non-malignant. I just didn't want to worry about it.

With the thinning of the ozone layer, the sun's rays are most definitely more dangerous than they were in the 60's, for example.

Thanks for the timely reminder.

Lois,

My deepest sympathy to you and your family. I lost my Dad to pancreatic cancer 8 years ago. You will be in my prayers.

Lois--my heart goes out to you. I am so sorry you lost your dad.

I lost my mother to melanoma on August 26, 1993, 5 months after they had found it in lymph nodes on her neck. It was the most painful loss I've ever experienced.

My prayers go out to you and your family.

Lois, My cousin died from melanoma just a few months ago, my brother is curretnly undergoing chemo for lung cancer and my father died from a blood cancer 14 years ago. I understand what you are going through and my prayers are with you and your family...

Lois - I'm so sorry about your dad. How difficult that it seemed to have happened so quickly. Thank you for the reminder to check our skin regularly. I'll be thinking about you and your family.
