My situation was totally different from Karins. I completely dislocated my kneecap when I was 13 (playing soccer, freak injury). I was given the "just do some leg lifts" option when I was 17 and told that know surgeon would touch me until I was 25 and officially done growing.
At the end of Feb I dislocated my kneecap (in the middle of a 5 mile run) for about the 7th time since I was 13, and went to talk to the doc. He said my only option to get my kneecap back in place, was a lateral release. My VML was strong, but due to the injury the outer knee muscle would continue to pull my knee out of place. I could exercise and live without pain for most of this time, but at any random time, my whole knee would collapse and I would be on crutches for a couple of days.
From what the PT said 8 weeks is VERY fast for a lateral release recovery. My youth and activity level pre-surgery were part of it, as well as the fact that there was not much cartiledge left in my knee after dislocating it so many times.
Until a couple of years pass without my knee collapsing, I will not know if the surgery was successful.
