Underwear size rant

I don't know why I'm never able to find underwear that is comfortable enough for me. I can't stand anything touching my waist, and the underwear has to be really stretchy. I'm still wearing underwear they stopped making 10 years ago.

So, I saw some Barely There bikini underwear in a catalog that was waist-band free and looked really stretchy. I looked at the size chart, and it indicated my size was a "P". I didn't believe it, so I ordered one pair of "S" and one pair "M" just to see what would fit.

Both the S and the M are too small. The size chart for the Barely There underwear reads as follows:

If hips measure 34-37, buy size P. If hips measure 38-41, buy size S. If hips measure 42-45, buy size M. If hips measure 46-49, buy size L.

My hips measure 35.5 inches.

I think the problem is that all the underwear charts have you measuring your hips and your waist. But I have this area BETWEEN the hips and the waist (tummy) where ALL my fat goes. My hips may be a size small, but my tummy is a size large. Considering my weird shape, I could really use some recommendations for some underwear that is very stretchy and very forgiving of my figure flaws.

Pretty soon all my old underwear is going to disintegrate from all the washings and I don't want to go commando.

Thanks!

Nancy

I like the cotton Victoria secret underwear. I don't know exactly what the are called, but I also can't stand anything touching my waist. They are the ones that VS always puts coupons for free ones in magazines? Does that help? Anyway I really like them.

Jeannemarie, those look really stretchy! :D Thanks!

ETA: JM, if you're a size medium, who the heck wears a small??? Shouldn't medium be the average size???

I've just been surfing the internet and have decided that my bikini days are over. :( Every single one of the bikini styles has a band that cuts across my lumpiest part, accentuating the fat rolls. I am now officially a candidate for those tummy-slimming briefs. Yuck. :(

Nancy, I am with you. This is one of my biggest pet peeves. Everything sits UNDER the tummy, making one look rather like... well, a muffin. :) So you are definitely not alone!

I found some great styles in Kohl's, of all places, but I spent about ONE HOUR looking at the underwear. I think I ended up buying Warner's. They're french cut but NOT bikini, so they sit higher and are very comfortable. I think you'll have to break down and to go a store and see what you can see.

Good luck!!

Yes Nancy, they are very stretchy and forgiving. They also don't produce panty lines, as promised! :)

I don't know about the size thing... it does seem odd that I would be a size medium or 6, but then again, maybe it's just my personal preference. I don't like things that bind, so it just always suited me better to buy the size 6's.

Good luck with your search. I really think you ought to try a pair of the Jockey's! I love them! :)

Yes! Marie, that is it exactly! Who the heck needs underwear that gives you a muffin top before you even put your pants on???? x( x(

I never shop at Kohl's, but I was there Christmas shopping last month. They had some great sales. Anyway, I found some really comfy, stretchy underwear by Maidenform. I can't think of the style name but it was stretch lace and had no waistband, really nice. I have the muffin top thing too that I try to avoid at all costs.

Coral, can you check the name or give more details? My 10-yr. old underwear is by Maidenform and it is the stretchiest stuff ever.

The outlet mall by be (in Michigan) has a maidenform store maybe you could do a search and find a store nearby.

I, too, love the Jockey underwear. I buy their boy shorts in a wonderful silky, stretchy fabric. They hit well below the waist and are virtually seamless. I wear them under knits with no lines showing. No muffin, no waistband, and it doesn't seem to matter whether I buy a 5 or a 6. There's also no tag. I could give you a rant on tags. I have to take a seamripper to everything at the waist, neck, along the side, and then try to remember the washing instructions.

Nancy,

I couldn't resist, but you always have the commando option!!! LOL, just kidding I like the Victoria's secret ones, but they seem to fit better after washing and sometimes stretch too much!

Good luck.

Hi, I took an 8 in theBarely There, I am normally a 6 in panties. I wear a size 4 or 6 in clothing. I think underwear buying ranks right up there with bathing suits. I hate buying both. I generally wait until they die because I hate buying them so much.

I bought the Maidenform low-rise boy short in both 6 & 7, they both fit the same

I bought Vanity Fair string bikini, size 6, they ran true to form

Nanyc, I was at Kohls today ( due to the underwear rant, it inspired me)

I bought
the Maidenform low-rise boy short, i bought them in both the 6 & the 7, they fit the same way, real nice & real comfy.

I bought BarelyThere , hipster & bikinis they ran small, I had to take them in an 8

Vanity fair, string bikini, they ran true to form, I bought them in a size 6.

Good luck

Nancy,

You know, the 10 year old ones you love so much may only be so stretchy b/c the elastic is about shot. :p

Sorry - I couldn't help myself. I'm going to Kohl's on Monday and now I'm gonna have to go underwear shopping. You're such an enabler. :)

This brings back memories.

It was 1989 and it was my first time in the U.S. It did not take long for me to realize that I was a Junior Size 11 in pants.

However, I was totally ignorant that panty sizes differ from skirt/pant sizes and I bought a pack of Hines Size 11 Hi-Cut Briefs! Those things were huge!!!!I was more than embarrassed and didn't return them to the store and simply threw them out.

In Germany, your pant/skirt sizes are the same as the underwear sizes.
