Under Active Thyroid

I went to the doctor Friday and she thinks I have a low thyroid from the symptoms I gave her. Unable to lose weight, losing hair, dry skin, puffy eyes, etc. She did a test so I will get the results this week.

So, I come to you guys. What do you know about this?

Scares me a little

Seems like there are a lot of us hypothyroids here. I was diagnosed at the beginning of this year. My symptoms were severe constipation, depression, vertigo, dry skin, weight gain, sensitivity to cold.

Don't be scared - it's really not a biggy. If you have it, you'll be put on some form of synthroid (I take Levothyroxine). Just a little pill you take every morning and you'll feel oh, so much better! It may take a little trial and error for your doctor to get the level correct. You'll most likely be asked to go for blood tests every 6 weeks (I'm overdue, darn it). If your levels are out of normal, your doctor will let you know and adjust your dosage. You'll probably have to go see the doctor every 6 months or so.

What sent me to the doctor was heart palpitations!!! That was scary! My hypothryoidism is called Hashimoto's Disease. I had no energy, was gaining weight, hair was thinning out...and my thyroid was full of nodules. Once I was on the Synthroid, I got back my old energy, it was possible to lose weight (but I really have to watch what I eat), my hair is thick again and my thyroid looks more normal.

I can really think of scarier and worse things (type II diabetes runs in my family and the thought of having to watch my eating that closely doesn't appeal to me), but with this under control (mine going on about 3 years), well, life is good.

Good luck and just do as your doctor says...and you should be fine!!!

I have it--didn't even know until I was in a car accident & the dr. at the emergency room told me I had a goiter. Definitely no big deal. I've been on the synthroid for more than 15 years now. I actually went off it about 6 months ago just to see what would happen (I've always been a little skeptical about it). I had serious sleep loss problems but that's about it.

My Mom and my sister both have thyroid issues, one is over-active and one is under-active (go figure!). I can never remember which is which but they both take a daily medication and are just fine. My mom has been taking her's since the 60's and my sister for at least 20 years.

Hi,
I have been taking Synthroid (Levothyroxine) for 32 years after being diagnosed with "Hypothryroidism". To this day, I still take a pretty high dosage. I go every 6 months to get a blood test to check my levels.

You can go to Mary Shomon's thyroid website at about.com. She has a lot of information. For some of us, it seems, nothing is simple (drat it!). I've been fighting this for 8 or 10 years, and I'm still having a lot of problems with it. But the about.com website should answer most of your questions and steer you in the right direction for any others that may come up.

My family's like that--mine's underactive & my sister's is overactive. Oddly enough we both take the same exact dose of synthroid.
