UGH! Sick dogs--I just need to rant!

Last Friday night my pug apparently ate something bad & went all over the house while I was asleep. It was gross, smelly & generally disgusting. I spent most of Sat. morning cleaning it up.

So the cleaning lady was by on Tuesday & my house was finally back to its usual fresh & clean self.

Then last night my 15 YO mutt woke me up at 1:00 am (at least she has the sense to wake me up--the silly little pug just doesn't get it). Unfortunately, she woke me AFTER she went all over my rug downstairs (the rug is less than a year old, $1500+). I got up & cleaned the mess right away. One whole roll of paper towels later I locked her in the bedroom w/me & for the rest of the night she woke me every 2 hours to go outside. I am so tired! And then when I got in the shower this morning she hit the rug again--4 times.

I swear I was so stressed & exhausted this morning I just had to get the hell out of the house & away from the dogs. I made an emergency call to my carpet cleaner & he's meeting me later today, but I'm really afraid of what I'll find when I get home.

Not to mention I feel horrible for the poor old girl. Not sure what to do to help her. Any advice? ;(

Hi Laura,

Do you possibly have a bad bag of dog food that's making making your dogs sick?

I have two dogs, a 25 pounder and a 75-80 pounder. The food I buy doesn't contain chemical preservatives, so it's not unheard of to occasionally get a bag that's gone bad. The few times this has happened , it's always affected my Boston Terrier first, and then my Boxer a day or two later. Usually in the form of diarrhea...and one time...explosive diarrhea...into a basket...of clean laundry...Bleccchh!

My vet usually recommends a few days of a bland diet for something like this - boiled chicken, maybe potatoes. I think a tablespoon canned pumkin, NOT pumkin pie filling, but just pureed pumpkin, will help with the diarrhea.

Good luck!

Edited to add - Also try a new bag of food.

Thanks Gayle. I think it might be this bag of treats I bought last week. I don't give them many treats & I'm pretty sure both incidents happened the day I did. The poor animals. They've been just miserable. So have I for that matter.

OK I'll pick up some pureed pumpkin. I don't even cook for myself, so I don't think I'll be doing it for the dogs LOL.

Maximus,

You have now experienced what it's like to have sick children. Ain't it fun x( :) .

P.S. Sick dogs are easier than sick kids.

Laura, I am sorry for your poor little doggies. That sounds pitiful. Hopefully it's just a virus or something they ate. I hope they, and you, are better soon. It sounds just like kids puking all night. It's a blast. :) Dogs are kids too though. :)

LauraMax, it's no fun when your baby pukes all night. It's like that for me every winter. I hope she feels better.:)

That's terrible! I hope the carpet can be cleaned and that you won't have another mess on your hands.

I'm glad that I can leave my dog in the back yard when he's got those sorts of problems.

I hate when the dogs get sick!!! why oh why is it always in the middle of the night????
our vet recommends, and it works well, boiled chicken or hamburg, drain off the fat, add cooked white rice and give it to them in small amounts.
don't know if it is too late for this or not, but it does work well.

good luck!
Wendy

Hi Laura,

I've had this happen, too. In the middle of the night.

As Wendy said, boiled hamburger, drained, and mixed with cooked white rice will help.

Good luck. :)
