TTC/Preggers Check-in week of March 9

Hey girls! No time for personals - its late and I have tons of paperwork. Just putting it off for a minute. Hope everyone is doing well. I'm discovering that the nausea is *manageable* if I eat - literally around the clock. This had better go away soon 'cause I'm gonna be a blimp!!

See you tomorrow!

Hello. My husband was sick on Monday, then my 5yo was sick yesterday; just waiting for the other 2 kids to get sick.

Morris- I eat Panera bagels ALL the time (and not the whole grain ones either). Not saying I am a model of nutrition, but don't feel bad about just one. Panera donates the leftovers to non-profits, so my DD's church/school has free Panera leftovers on Tuesdays. My freezer is full of frozen bagels and pastries calling for defrosting. Orange scones are the best.

I did Sharon Twombley's All Body Attack and it KILLED me. It was hard. It's a lot like drill max but the cardio is harder and the weights are easier. If she weren't so likable, I would have thrown my puny 5# weight at the TV.

Maggie- glad your friend is doing well. I just hit 24 weeks and I had a friend deliver twins at 24 weeks and 4 days; I always get very emotional about it. The twins had a rough start but are now almost 4 and doing well (of course with some special needs for eating and sensorial issues).

Oh girls! I can't imagine having a baby so early. How scary.

Kristan, LOL on the puny 5# weight! Hope you all stay healthy!

Morris, You carb-craving too?? Energy for that growing baby!

Lisa, How's the lip today?

Maggie, No worries on the emotions. Anything's gotta be better than my PMS! (which DH is SO GLAD is on hiatus!)

My oldest turns 6 tomorrow and her friend party is tonight at 5. I'll have a busy day getting everything set up and ready.

I'm feeling REALLY barfy this AM. Typing here trying to put it off. I don't think I can wait anymore though. Hope you all have a good day!

kristan, the all body attack sounds great - i may look into that! how scary to deliveer at 24 weeks. i will remember that when i feel like i just want pregnancy to be over.

kate, so sorry today is bad. i highly recommend panera bagels:)

maggie, hope you are well.

lisa, any better?

well, i left work early yesterday, tok a nap, and then, yes, worked out to cardio fusion. it was just great! todya i am a little better but pushing thru. i did a run this am, and it felt pretty good. i am missing my salsa on my eggs though! bbl everyone

Hi ladies,
Just a quick note to let you know DH surgery went just fine. Had a scare last night though. He tried laying down to go to bed and had this awful pain up his chest, arms and shoulders. I guess they blow you up with CO2 for the surgery and that stuff can linger, so takes a while for the gas to get out and can cause pain. So, he ended up sleeping on the couch in upright position all night. If we want a follow up sperm analysis that will be in 3 months, but given our current status of pregnancy, we're hoping we won't need to do that.

I'm doing great and don't even 'feel' pregnant, so that always has me worried, but I have my first u/s on Monday, so happy about that. Will let you know how that turns out.

Lisa - How's the lip dear?

Hi to all, but have to run, I'm at work...

anne, so glad dh's surgery went well. i have heard about co2 buildup being painful. hope he recovers quickly. cannot wait for your us!!

i was wondering if anyone has any info or has had a diastisis? what causes it? can we do something to cause it? i read in another thread a poster worried she'd cause it with ab exercises. i never knew that was a concern. thansk for any info!

Morris, here are some links that may answer your questions

From Sheila:
For those unfamiliar with diastasis recti, I have included below an excerpt from the "Healthy Moms(R) Perinatal Fitness Instructor Training Manual......"

Diastasis Recti
As a quick review, the rectus abdominis is the outermost abdominal muscle, which attaches from the top of the ribs to the pubic bone. It is composed of two halves called recti that are normally about a half an inch apart. The two recti are joined by a fibrous band of connective tissue or central seam known as the linea alba. The hormones of pregnancy cause the linea alba to soften. This is why women notice a “thicker” waistline early in their pregnancies. This softening coupled with the increased pressure from the growing baby may actually cause the two recti to separate around the area of the navel, somewhat like a zipper separating under stress. The onset of diastasis recti may be gradual or sudden (Ex. During a bout of coughing or during labor). During pregnancy, a gap or bulge is often noticed in the seam when the head and shoulders are raised. This is the “telltale” sign of a diastasis. Women sometimes find their diastases when they are rising out of bed and notice the bulge.

Implications
Pregnant women should be checked for separation after the 20th week of pregnancy or when they begin to “show.” They should be checked every few weeks after their initial assessment. Clients should also be checked after they return to class postpartum, as they may have separated during labor and delivery.

The oblique muscles, which are involved with trunk rotation, insert into the linea alba. If a mom has a separated rectus muscle, she should not be doing rotational oblique work as this could encourage further separation. It is necessary to “splint” the seam (i.e. the “corrective” exercise) by crossing the hands over the lower abdomen when doing abdominal work.

Cathe, diastisis recti question
I actually was never able to fully repair my split (above my navel) and have so far opted against a surgical repair because of how extensive and invasive it is.

I tried the recommended exercises in the book, Essential Postpartum Exercises, by Elizabeth Noble, who is also physical therapist and saw some improvement. I remember hearing that it is important to stay away from all exercises that would encourage the split (ie: oblique exercises and even daily living exercises such as reaching across to put on a seat belt or rotating your body to backout of a parking spot).

For now, I find all transverse work (ie: planks) helpful in maintaining good overall strength, however, no matter how strong my core is, I still find that I have a certain degree of sensitivity and weakness during certain times of the month (in which at those times, holding in my abs or standing up straight brings on mild back and shoulder spasms). This is the one reason I have not fully ruled out surgical repair but am still strongly leaning in the direction of NOT having it done.

Good Luck to you with your "repair work". Keep me posted!

Kristan--early births are so scary! This was this friend's 6th child and she'd never had problems before--just an out of the blue thing. I can't wait to get more information on why it happened. I'm going to check out that All Body Attack you mentioned, for post partum--I'm totally modifying everything at this point:-(

Autumn--thanks for the information. What's funny about it is one of the first ways I suspect I'm pregnant is that my waist thickens and that's always the term I've used--I just start to feel "thick".

Kate--I am so sorry you are feeling so bad--just eat--you'll feel better in the second trimester and get that healthy eating thing back. You are in survival mode now, hon.

Morris--glad you are feeling more energetic--You amaze me, totally!

Anne--glad your husband's surgery went well. And you are in my prayers for Monday.

Sometimes I think pregnancy is just like one big PMS....

take care, all
Maggie
17 weeks,4 days:)

Hi Morris. Sounds like you're doing good.

Lisa, sorry about DH. How's he feeling now?

Autumn, Thanks for looking all that up. That was sweet of you!

Maggie, I am feeling VERY thick right now. I know I'm not "showing" but boy, do I look different. Thanks for the eating encouragement.

I'm feeling pretty darn good today. Tongiht was Gina's 6th bday aprty so I've been crazy busy all day. I think just too busy to focus on the fact that I feel lousy. If crazy-business helps, bring it on baby!

Looking forward to having DH home this weekend! The girls are too. We love the weekend! Wish it lasted longer...:) Have a good one!

kate, what does dh do? glad your party went well. i would not have the energy for that!!

maggie, i completely agree with your pregnancy/pms comment - it is so totally true.

i am so tired of feeling lousy. yesterday just got worse and worse until i got to bed. this am i felt great and got up for a long run. now i am at work (yes, on saturday), and my head is pounding and my whole body hurts. i would kill for a huge cup of real coffee. alas, i am sipping green tea and willing myself to be better.

no exciting plans here this weekend. dh leaves monday night for a couple of weeks, so we are just going to enjoy some quiet time. i am hoping we all go out for chinese tonight. that is the only thing that sounds good right now.

I'm feeling better and better - hopefully on an upswing. I semi-feel like working out tonight but we've been so busy (funeral/luncheon today that was a ways away)that I'm looking forward to a nice quiet night with Mike. DDs are in the tub and will be going to bed soon. I feel like I'm on the verge of coming out of this 1st trimester funk. yay!! My body is changing so much its scary. My boobs are spilling out over the top of my bra and my abs have gotten so loose its scary. I've only gained 3 pounds (couldn't resist checking) - the way I've been eating carbs I was sure I'd gained TEN!) but my waist is non-existent and I just don't look like me. Kind of exciting. I'm only 9 weeks today but I'm attributing the quick change to the fact that this is my 3rd pregnancy and my body just knows what to do. No real "bump" yet - just changes.

Morris, DH is a plumbing contractor. We do commercial, multi-family, industrial, and some residential. Also hydronic heating and fire suppression. He is very busy and under lots of stress so I try to be supportive with the hours that he works but sometimes I get frustrated. What does your DH do that he travels so much? I know I'm lucky that Mike gets to come home every night. Sorry you're not feeling well - and that you have to work today! Chinese always *sounds* good. Then I eat it and an hour later I am belching like mad and so sorry that I gave in again.

Hope everyone else is having a good day - see you!

Hi everyone! My lip is getting much better. Swelling has come down a lot, but still a little stiff. Sorry I've been MIA, but between my lip surgery and nausea, it was difficult to do anything. Then to top things off, DH badly sprained his ankle a few days ago which did not help at all. He's doing better now and today has been a considerably good day so I squeezed in a workout this a.m. I did BM2 bootcamp. I only worked out 3x this week and hoping next week gets better.

Hi Autumn! You are always a wealth of knowledge!

Kate - I'm barely at 7 weeks, but I swear my body is changing also. My clothes fit, but I'm so bloated. I think the prenatal vitamins isn't helping with the iron, KWIM?

Morris - I have not been eating well. I went out and got a white bagel yesterday and it tasted soooo good. I haven't been eating a lot between the nausea and my lip so when I do, I just eat whatever will not make me pukey. Peanut m&ms was one of them!

Anne - Hope DH feels better. I can't wait to hear back from you after your u/s! I have an appt on Thursday, but I don't know if I'm going to even get an u/s out of it.

Kristan - LOL about the 5# weights!

Maggie - How's the knee doing? Have you gotten your big u/s yet?

Hi to anyone else I missed. I gotta get going and do some work. I also need to balance our checkbook, but I haven't been doing much of anything lately and now I'm dreading all the catching up I have to do. I better take advantage of the fact that I'm feeling decent today!

Lisa

Lisa, Glad all is well, despite that it isn't! Who is waiting on who - you or DH?! Good for you on the workout. I'm not tonight but I'm feling so much better that I hope to tomorrow. Glad to hear another early pregger feels her body is changing. My SIL is due 5 days after me and is a BEAN POLE! I feel like a moose next to her even though I still can wear a 6. She wears a 0. No joke. I agree with you on the white bread. Pre-preg I NEVER ate that stuff - now its all I want. Today we went out to b'fast and I had a giant PANCAKE for goodness sake!!! I never would've ate that before. I'd gotten really behind with paperwork too. Feeling a little more controlled now but I still could spend a day in my office. But - Life's too short - I'm gonna relax with my huby instead tonight! I did get the kitchen cleaned and some laundry done so I haven't been a total sloth tonight.

Everybody enjoy their Sat. night!

Hi,
I had a good time catching up with all of you just now. It seems like we are all doing fine, except for feeling a little sick and jiggly:) .
Anne-glad to hear DH surgery went well. How are you feeling? Can't wait to hear about US on Monday.

Morris-You do such awesome workouts. But, I have a ? for you...what kind of heavy duty sports bra do you wear on your runs? My boobs ache so bad, that I couldn't even imagine running;( .

Kate-I hope you enjoyed a relaxing night with your hubby.

Lisa-glad to hear that your lip is doing better, but sorry to hear about DH's ankle. If it's not one thing...

Kristan-You didn't get sick, did you? So many of my students have been getting the flu, and when the get it, they are out for up to 2 weeks!!! Can I tell you how scared I am???? I have this very dull sore throat, so I am hoping that it just goes away on its own (soon).

Autumn-thanks for the info

Hi Lisa(Marie) and Melanie.

I am still getting nauseous throughout the day, but not every day. Mornings have been bad for the past 3 days, but I still have yet to throw up. I am almost out of my 1st trimester, so this can stop now. My workouts for this past were the best I have done in a while. I did lots of raking today plus the scrambled cardio of Drill Max. I also took 4 walks (some just small ones with my son), did TJ cardio party and kickboxing from 4-Day split (yes, I still have it...I just couldn't bring myself to sell it). Wow! I really need to do more weights.

Tonight, I went to my neighbor's with my DH and son for a cookout. the weather was so nice, we thought we'd take advantage of it. I went a little overboard on the food, so I feel like I am going to bust now. By the way, I heard yet one more weight gain comment this week. I know, I know, I should just shrug it off. Women are so nasty sometimes, that sometimes I think it would be easier to turn into a guy (I'm not really serious...).But, you catch my drift.

Well, I am off to watch a movie with my DH.

-Jen

Jen, I hope the sore throat bug doesn't bite you! How many weeks are you now? I think you're a little ahead of me... A cookout sounds great! Too cold here yet. Enjoy YOUR quiet night too!
