Janie, I bought my first road bike because I decided I wanted to train for a triathlon. I got a Specialized Secteur, it's men's bike. As I was told at the bike shop I have a longer torso, therefore I was leaning to far on even the large women's bike frame. I really like the bike and I trusted the lady at the bike shop. The first bikeshop I went to tried to talk me into a carbon frame and all fancy stuff right away, despite of the fact that this was my first road bike. I am not going to spend over 2,000 on my first bike, if I don't even know that I will stick with biking or triathlon, thank you very much. The Secteur has an aluminium frame and compared to my previous "regular" bike it is pretty light. I am as happy as a clam.
Which triathlon did you sign up for?
I KNOW what you mean about some bike shops sometimes they really want to just make a buck. Luckily my husband mountain bikes pretty regularly and is pretty knowledgable of bikes and we have a good relationship with the bike shop in town. I have a medium quality Specialized mountain bike that I got for $800.00 it doesn't have all the fancy bells and whistles that my husbands bike has but I'm 100% happy with it. It does what it needs to do, . . any how my theory is that unless I plan on winning a race I don't need to spend thousands of dollars. I just need a good quality bike with good quality components.
These are the triathalons I want to sign up for
Napa Valley Vintage Triathlon :
triathlon : Swim 1.2 Miles, Bike 56 Miles, Run 13.1 Miles
I'm to late for this one because it happens next month and I deffinitely need to train for it so I'd probably sign up for next year.
Triathlon at Pacific Grove Olympic Distance :
triathlon : Swim 1500 meters, Bike 24.9 miles, Run 6.2 miles
This one is in Monterey and we vacation there every year.
So many people here are really motivating me to do this. Like Travis, ellesan, and Tricia I want to sign up so that I'll be committed and if I invested in a bike I know that there is no turning back. My husband wanting to do it with me pushes me even more.
Here is the thing. Despite the fact that I lived on an island for 9 years I don't know how to swim and when I say I don't know how to swim I MEAN I'd sink like a rock to the bottom if I tried. So, . . .I embarrassingly would have to sign up for swim lessons. I could probably do the run and the bike portion but the swim would be the hardest. I live in California so the water is far from tropical warm which would make it even harder. Truth is I'm scared outta my skin, . . but now that I've read you are doing one too it makes me want to do one too!
