tread mill runners...

Can ya all give me some advice??/ I'm starting a new job on the 7th of november that seems like it is going to be really time consuming. I decided i need to get up an hour earlier to get my workout in before work. I think i need a treadmill, as the area i will have to workout is downstairs and i can't be jumping up and down doing a video down there (hard flooring and more)

Anyway, since i do love to run, but it is too dark out that early, thought maybe i could do a 30 minute run on the treadmill before work. I'm having trouble picking out a treadmill. Sears has a huge selection, any one recommend one???

Also, do you people who run on treadmills find them to be a pretty decent workout?? I love my videos cause they are fun, but it does take at least 45 minutes to really feel worked out with them.

Thanks for any/ all input!!

Wendy

Wendy, I'm jealous!! I miss having convenient access to a treadmill.

I have never bought one, but I've read a few posts of people who have researched the heck out of them before buying. I suggest doing an advanced search for "research" and "treadmill" and trying to find those posts.

Good luck and have a heck of a lot of fun! I'm very excited for you!

Hey wendy,

I find that treadmills give great workouts. I used to do my workouts in the morning before work and doing the treadmill first thing in the morning will burn fat. 30 mins of a vigorous jog or run is a great workout. As far as a good treadmill, I got mine at dicks sporting goods. It is a Pro-form 625 and I have been happy with it. but some of the other ladies might have some more recommendations.

Good luck with the morning exercising!

Hi Wendy!

I just got my treadmill last weekend. So far, I LOVE it! I researched them at www.treadmilldoctor.com.

I ended up with the Pacemaster Gold Elite.

I use the Cardio Coach workouts which I downloaded to my ipod while running on my treadmill. The workouts are great! I average about 45 minutes and I am drenched with sweat by the end. The link to that site is www.cardiocoach.com.

I have found that keeping the treadmill on an incline while running helps with the intensity.

Good luck!

Hello Wendy, welcome to the treadmill world:),

I bought my treadmill in 2000. It is a Pro-Form 630 DS, very basic, simple and easy to use. Bought it from Sears. No bells and whistles but serves the purpose. When I first bought it, it was solely for walking. However, I started running in 2003. My treadmill is solid but now, since I'm an Intermediate/advanced runner, as crazy as this sounds;-) , I can't wait for it to break to buy a more "upscale" treadmill because I use it a lot. I suggest you go to a either a commerical supplier of fitness equipment or a specialty store besides the "consumer sporting goods" places like Modell's, Sports Authority or Sears. I say this because the specialty stores have more knowledegable staff and you get better warranties/service. I bought a great rucumbent bike this way. The only thing is that the price may be more but believe me it's worth it! If, this isn't possible, go online or to your local library and get a copy of Consumer Reports and check the most recent reviews on treadmills. That's how I picked out my Pro-Form.

Hope this helps, happy trails:),

I love my treadmill.. here is the manufacturer: www.visonfitness.com

The only think I can recommend is to get the best one you can afford. Make sure it has an automatic incline, and that the running surface is wide enough and long enough. Mine has all kinds of programs, and a heart rate monitor with programs that can be run from that based on your heart rate. Not that these are necessary, but sometimes I get bored and it helps make it more interesting.

I currently and doing the "Ready, Set, Go" Sprint 8 program and love it!

Just remember: don't get up an hour earlier unless you can get to bed an hour earlier. Sleep is even better for your waistline than a workout.

Nancy- can you start a national campaign for this message? I'll support it all the way.

Or, if you could just call my profs and my boss and my DH and convince them, that would be enough... ;)

No, really Amy. So many articles I've read of late have said so. Want me to find some links? Sleep really does slim your waist. Really. Unfortunately, my boss doesn't much care about my waistline either. :( He would be happy if I never slept at all, and just spent all my time at the office.

Hi Wendy,

I have had my treadmill about a year. It's a NordicTrack E3200. I LOVE it! I run and walk on it , and use the incline features all the time for greater intensity and interval climbs. My treadmill is sitting in front of the pc , which doubles as a TV, so I watch my favorite shows while exercising and time flies by!

Good luck with your research.

Oh, Nancy, I wasn't kidding to begin with!! I'm a big believer in SLEEP making so many things so much better- mentally, physically, you name it. I feel best at 9 hours a night, although these days I'm lucky to get 8. But I think the campaign would be fabulous!

Wendy, I have a Landice and have had it for 8 years now. It was really expensive and we bought it from a fitness store. We spent more money on one since both DH and I were going to use it and so needed something real sturdy.

With that said, 30 minutes on the treadmill is a great way to start the morning. I would always prefer to run outside but I think I get a great workout on the treadmill - and yes you'll feel worked out!

A little late throwing my 2 cents in here, but I have a Life Fitness treadmill that I love. It's also expensive, but it's a workhorse--I've used it for an hour every morning for 7 years now. It took a while at first, but now it's gotten to the point where if I don't workout in the morning, I don't feel right. Oh, I do use a big fan trained right on me and I listen to music AND watch tv. Lol! But it keeps me from being bored or overheated. :)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!! I think i'm going out and about later today to look at some treadmills. Especially important your opinions are, since i plan on running mostly on this treadmill.
Unfortunately, there aren't any bigger fitness stores around here, mostly just department style ones(sears, walmart) and Dunhams. Sears really did look to have a lot of treamills though.

I may have to buy mine online, so if any suggestions for websites, that would help too.

thanks also for letting me know how you like your treadmills.
I am used to my step videos, spinning and some running outside, so this will be a change.

have a great day!
