Trans-fat free?

SRP

I'm working to eliminate trans-fats from my diet. Is anyone else concerned about this? I just keep hearing about the potential long-term health risks, like cancer... but then, what doesn't cause cancer these days?

I generally eat pretty clean, but this decision means I'll have to eliminate margarine. That'll be tough! And the sad thing is, I have a brand new tub of it, unopened, in my fridge. I guess I'll walk down the road and give it to my parents.

I tried some of the trans-fat free margarine sold in health food stores. It's pretty good but expensive. So, THAT will provide an incentive to cut down on margarine completely! It can only help, right?

Why don't you try Parkay or I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray Butter. I believe they are both trans fat free and taste great.

I try and stay away from them. A lot of stuff is now being labelled trans fat free, so that helps. I use that ICBINB spray, it does have a little in it, but the suggested serving size keeps it virtually zero. You could always use butter. As long as you watch portions, it would be ok. They have that new spreadable butter out, in tubs.

Yes, I always keep a little real butter on hand, because I love it on homemade bread! I've never checked out the butter sprays - always been a little leery of spray-on food. :) I'm trying to work more olive oil into my diet, like on pasta dishes.

Haven't tried this, but I was told by someone if you put margarine & butter on the ground watch to see where the flies go. Was also told that margarine was next to plastic or was that twinkies was next to plastic :(. Anyway I hear that margarine is bad for you. These are things I heard don't really know if they're true or not.

Me personally, I prefer butter.

I use Smart Balance Light. Plain Smart Balance is also available.

It has not trans fat and contains flax oil "to achieve an ideal 4 to 1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3".

I use the same thing as Elaine, and I really like it. I buy it at my local grocery store.

I just saw a show on Good Morning America a couple of months ago about this very topic. The person that was talking basically said that make sure you are reading the label. It may say no-trans fat on the container, but then in fine print it still says "per serving", so it is still in there. Read the label and look to see if it says partially hydrogenated oil, or hydrogenated oil on the ingredients, these are your 'trans-fats'. The nutitionist guy on the morning show said that if he had to rank them he would put margarine at the bottom, then butter, and then the "new" butters that are coming out....Like Smart Balance. I actually got Smart Balance because of this show, and really like it.

I also use Smart Balance, Smart Balance Light with Omega3/6, and the Smart Balance spray (which I love!)They all taste great, the regular makes outstanding baked products, and they are pretty reasonably priced, as well as go on sale.

Okay - I just bought some Smart Balance last night. Yeah! Thanks for the info. I am a notoriously lazy shopper and have a hard time convincing myself to look for new products. With everyone's advice, I went right to the stuff, knowing ahead of time that it was there.

I avoid transfats (and usually don't buy foods that say "partially hydrogenated" on the label). I use Earth Balance sometimes, but don't use a lot of margarine in the first place. Added fats in my diet are usually olive or canola oil (in addition to the natural fats from nuts, olives, avocados, etc.).

Keep checking the ingredients because the transfat grams do not have to be listed until 1/1/06. There's a lot of early compliance which helps.
