Cathe--

You look absolutely fabulous in the pix you've posted! What was your training diet? I'd love to look that buff!!! Can't wait until the release (& delivery) of the new Hardcore Series or for the possibility of attending your fitness camp. Good luck with the rest of filming and take care!

All the best

I'm obviously not Cathe, but I'm bumbing this question for this reason:

Over the many years I've participated in the forum and done Cathe workouts, she has been noticably reluctant to post a day-in-the-life diet. We know she eats clean, but not what or how much.

Given that almost all of us KNOW that 70 to 80 percent of our results depend on diet, and we've all seen the physical transformation in Cathe AND cast members, I really think they owe it to their members to talk about diet. In fact, I think Cathe is doing a disservice to members/fans by not talking more about her diet, because it's a fact that diet is so important to our results.

Part of the reason Cathe is successful is because we like the way she looks. The videos sell in part because they say: If you do this, you might look like Cathe and crew. But most members have trouble with achieving the lean, muscular physique that they desire - they work out hours and hours to Cathe and other videos, etc., but do not get results because of diet.

If you're going to sell your results, then a published diet should accompany a workout plan.

I also know Cathe will say that what works for her might not work for everyone, but I think that most of us just want a guideline, or to know that we don't look as lean/muscular because of our diets, and not because the workouts aren't sufficient.

Well, those are my 0.02 :)

I suppose a general guideline would be interesting, but we can find that kind of information in a thousand places. Also, what works for Cathe may not work for, say, Cedie...or you. Or me.

Cathe has said in the past, more than once, that she is not a dietician & does not feel qualified or comfortable giving out such information. I imagine that's mostly because we rabid fans;-) will immediately assume "if Cathe says it, it's straight from God's lips", or something along those lines. Also, even if she decides to give us a very general guideline, people will immediately start posting 6,000 questions & requests for more, more, more.

I too would love to know what Cathe eats, (although, again, it might not work for me) but I can understand why she doesn't want to open that Pandora's box.

Just my .02
Ruth:)

In the section here about how Cathe got back into shape after pregnancy, Cathe does actually go into a little more about diet, eg cutting starch about 85% and drinking lots of water. She has also at times advised eating a little extra protein for building muscle and not going too low on carbs if you feel you are lacking the energy to workout.

Regarding more detail than that, I respect Cathe for not wanting to give exact details. She is not a qualified dietician. Plus, if she did post a typical day, other people would try to follow it which wouldn't be correct for them. I expect that Cathe has obtained personal advice for herself from a dietician. She advises that others do the same, and I think that's fair enough.

I agree and RESPECT Cathe's decision to not go into any personal eating details since she has a very active lifestyle & differs from us all in the gene factor!

IMHO ,it's a very DELICATE situation not only because she's a role model but because sadly there are soo many people with eating disorders ! It's best to keep any diet ADVICE/guidlelines to the dieticians/specialist!

I agree too... I imagine that Cathe will probably go into some details about how she and her crew prepared as she did with the Intensities... I don't think she will get anymore specific than that... and I think that is extremely smart on her part... as many of you and she has said... she is not a licensed expert in eating, you know. Or atleast, not that I know of anyway.

Well, you know, I respect all of your opinions. And I understand what you're saying. But I disagree in the point about her not being an expert. Anyone who's trained for a specific LOOK in bodybuilding or figure is an expert at diet due to the rigorous dieting that MUST accompany training.

Again, given the physical transformations, which are the result mainly of lifting/cardio AND diet, then an explanation of diet is in order.

Put it this way, if you wanted to understand why either Bush or Kerry wins, you would want to look at more than simply a single factor, right? You'd want to know whether voters were influenced by Iraq, abortion, personality, etc.. You'd want to know the factors of influence. I'm a scientist, and I want to know exactly the factors that effect change. Not just one factor.

Again, I'm just looking at it from a different point of view. I doubt most of us would follow the diet exactly - it's not like we all want to be Cathe, we just want to know what it takes to get lean and strong. And it takes more than videos.

happy all saints day!
:)

Well in order to cut your bodyfat you MUST be consistent & VERY disciplined; that means no sugar, no alcoholic beverages & probably no coffee either. Eat 5-6 small meals a day for 7 days a week. Its a difficult diet to adhere to & the reason why women don't look like Cathe is because they can't do the diet. I've posted my meals for quite a while now & most (not all I've converted Jen already) of the women can not do my diet. Why? Because of the time it takes to plan the meals & the cooking. Its time consuming. I'm sure Cathe eats my way as well as taking a multi-vitamin. She has to eat this many times a day in order to keep up her energy level. Come check out the Healthy Eating thread & get some good ideas. HTH, Kathy:D

PS: And please don't blast me for my opinions. OK?;-)

Same here I respect everyone's opinion ;-)

"Again, given the physical transformations, which are the result mainly of lifting/cardio AND diet, then an explanation of diet is in order"

I'm sure Cathe will give a vague rundown of how she prepared for her training, but I wouldn't count on any Emphasis on anything specific! Whatever she decides to disclose I hope everyone is satisfied and content that she is atleast SHARING with us! After all this is her site and her call and I feel very fortunate to be able to connect to her on here!

PS transformation success stories will ALWAYS differ since everyone's starting point is different!

lisa Hi Kathy, what do you mean by the "eating healthy thread" I am totally interested! Looking to break through a plateau I am having. Thanks Lisa

I for one would like to see more explanation on diet as well. I don't expect exact detail about what to eat for every meal but some ideas for meals would be nice and what one eats to get very lean. I agree that a very big part of Cathe's look is her diet. This is one thing that I really liked about P90x is the emphasis on eating and what one must do to get lean, to lose that extra 10 pounds.

I hope she talks about this and gives some examples.

I agree with this post. It is one thing to discuss this subject between members in order to share experiences. But I agree with the way Cathe has handeled this subject to date. There are many other resources dedicated to different diet plans. A diet was incorporated for P90X but not by the video lead. As far as everybody being different....I followed the P90X diet to the T and gained alot of weight while following the workout rotation. I eventually modified the diet and workouts (adding other dvds into my rotation) and this worked better for me. I have read varying results from others using P90X. I feel it is better to really look at my entire situation (goals, lifestyle...) and accept realistic results. I must say that I embrace all body shapes and appreciate the differences. However, physical appearance is not the only reason I work out.

What Cathe HAS said...
She eats apple with (natural?) peanut butter
She sometimes eats a protein bar
She eats foods in their "cleanest state" as much as possible- clean being apple is preferable to apple sauce, which is preferable to apple pie
She does eat meat
She eats 5-6 small meals a day
That's just what I remember......outlining a diet is not something that only Cathe can do for you.

You can find your resting metabolic rate and then craft a diet based on that.
RMR will determine how many calories your body will burn if you do nothing but lie down.

Hi, all--

I certainly didn't intend to open this Pandora's Box, I was merely curious as to the amazing transformation Cathe made during pre-production and production of the Hardcore series.

Certainly, the issues surrounding the individuality of genetics, including body-type, and eating disorders are serious ones. In no way was I trying to make Cathe--or you--feel uncomfortable by asking these questions. Women in fitness magazines, like Kelly Ryan and J. Hendershott, are quite open about their training diets; however, I simply didn't see the earlier threads that would have warned me not to ask such questions of Cathe. What I did intend to say (obliquely)with these questions was, "You have always looked fabulous, but you continue to look more and more amazing every year, Cathe!"

She who is eagerly awaiting the new DVDs...

Hi Callie,

Just wanted you to know that there is certainly nothing wrong with being curious. Your post did not make me feel uncomfortable. For my part, I was just sharing my thoughts on the subject of Cathe owing specific diet plans to forum members. I have never seen any threads warning not ask about such things. As it already has been pointed out, Cathe has shared some general information. So don't feel like you overstepped (or anyone else). Everyone has a point of view. I agree with you that Cathe looks very fit.

I'll be eagerly waiting with you,
jordan

Hi Callie,

I agree that you did not "over-step" in any way. And you certainly didn't make me feel uncomfortable. There's nothing wrong with asking questions. Opinions will always vary...that's why it's called a forum!;-)

Also eagerly waiting with you,
Ruth:)

RE: Training diet answers

I believe the buff ones pretty much follow a "fitness competitors" diet.

You CAN get Cathe's look by following either Body For Life (buy the book or check out the website for free basics), the Firm 14 Day Diet (requires membership to FirmBelievers club), or MuscleandFitnessHers.com the Fitness Competitors Diet (click on the Nutrition line on the left and then look on page 2 it's there, it's free, and they even have recipes on their site).

Oxygen Magazine, Muscle and Fitness Hers, and Fitness Rx all have nutrition and recipes that are geared to people who work out hard!!
It's higher protein, modified carbs, and low fat. That's it. No cheating, several small meals a day. It's tough, but worth it!

The bottomline is you have to stick with it for 5 or 6 weeks to start to see results - and NOT cheat. That's the hard part. No alcohol, no cheating at parties or out for dinner. Depending on your starting point, to look like Cathe & crew, it could take 12 or 24 weeks. It's discipline!! It's a new way of eating - forever.

If you stay with it and keep working out - YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Best wishes

RE: Training diet answers

Hi!

I'd like to thank the last three posters for all of their comments! I'm rather close to my fitness goals, now, and I guess I'm lucky that losing weight, as such, isn't one of them. However, lately fitness competition--or at least having the fitness level and looks of a fitness competitor!--has seemed more and more intriguing. So, for those chiseling those last few "cuts," I'll definitely check out those fitness menus and undoubtedly achieve even greater results wtih the challenging new Hardcore Series whenever it arrives! :D

Take care and happy exercising!

--Callie

P.S. If anyone has a rotation suggestion with the intensity of Cathe's July 2004 rotation, please let me know. I achieved great results with that one and would love another four-weeker to alternate with that one.
