Torn Ligament

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone ever had a torn ligament in their knee? If so, does it require a surgery? How do they fix it? How long does it take to heal? Does all torn ligament in the knee require a surgery or can you survive ok?

Thanks

My husband had a torn ligament about 2 years ago. He had a quick laser surgery that corrected it. He was given cruches, but never used them. He was sore for a couple of weeks. Then he was off running again with no problems. If you would like more details, just ask and I can find out from him. Sorry to hear this happened. I know it's painful. x(

Hi,
Do you mind if I emailed you some questions?

Thanks!

No, I dont mind at all. I'll get them answered as best as I can for you.

It depends on what ligament is torn. Both of my sisters tore their ACL and both required surgery. They were back to playing soccer shortly thereafter. I think they were about mid 30s when they had the surgery.

My ex-boyfriend had a torn medial collateral ligament and did not require surgery. He had to be careful with pivoting type movements but as long as he kept his hamstrings and quads strong, never had any problems.

I had my ACL torn as well. I put off surgery for 10 years. The only problem that I had was every now and then it felt like me knee would pop out of place. Then the muscles would and maybe pull a bit around my knee and I'd be in pain for a week or so. I fianlly got the nerve to just go get it fixed. Very glad that I did though!

Kathy,
That is what I think I have. My knee pops out occassionally. I think I might've torn ACL. It happened this past Jan. I never got it checked out because I was pregnant and didn't want to do XRays because of the baby. Now I am ready to get it checked. I hope I didn't do a lot of damage. My knee blew up to the size of grapefruit the next day and it was so bruised on my inner knee. The back of my knee still hurts a little. I do work out but not to step, squats, lunges or running for now. It's a lot stronger now than it has been but feels stiff and still is swollen. Do you go to a regular dr or do you have to find a specialist for the check up? I walk normally and all but if I stand too long my knee gets swollen again. It's annoying.

What kind of a surgery did you have? Was it fast? Did you have to go for a physical therapy?

One more question, after you had the surgery, were you able to go back to stepping if you do stepping?

I had to have ACl reconstruction with some miniscus cut out and have my bone filed down a little. I think I was back on my feet at about three weeks. I pushed myself very hard after the surgery to get back into shape and on my feet. It might have even been after two weeks, but I'm not too clear on that anylonger. (Lots of pain releavers the first week.)
I had arthroscopic and one long ensission (sp?) just below my knee and off to the right a little at an angle. they scraped my back left ligament to get a piece for my acl. They then srewed that into place.

I believe that I was back to Cathe in January, I had the surgery in Oct, so what three months or so? I could not do any pivoting, so I had to modify some of the moves, and I was very careful to make sure that I was in the air if I was doing a hop turn over the step or something like that. I started off after 4 weeks on a stationary bike, going very slowly to stretch out my muscles and ligaments, then I went to Kathy Smith (woo hoo!). I now do everything that I used to do,yes, step is included, I just don't ever feel like my knee is going to pop out any longer. All in all it was a good experience for what it was.
If you want to ask me any questions that I haven't answered for you already please feel free to email me. I would be glad to help set your anxiety at ease a bit.
