Today Show-Just Fuming At PPL

Cathlete
i am watchign the Today show and they are doing a special about ppl taking serious medicines jsut for the side effects of losing weights. Honestly when you get sick from this, i say to bad so sad,you deal with it. How can you take a "cocktail mix" of seizure, diabetes, and add drugs just to lose a few pounds??? Are ppl really getting that stupid?? i am not usually so harsh but seriously now. One woman said she stopped taking it b/c she was loosing her hiar and blah, but she said she would do anything to lose weight but she woudl rather be fat then bald!!! Well eat like a sensible human and get 20-60 mins of exercise. its got to be better to put in the hard work then to kill yourself this way. My daughter takes ritalin and it kills me that i have to do it but b/c her brain wiring, she medically needs to. These are serious meds for serious issues. Its jsut another sad state of ppl taking desparate measures. Instead of spending all this money(b/c it has to be bought underground, not from doctors) on drugs, hire a pro to help with a eating and exercise plan.

okay off my soapbox, thanks for letting me complain for the day.

"And do what thee wilt as long as ye harm none"

Kassia, reading this makes me want to knock their fool heads together and say 'what the he!! are you thinking y'idiots'!! The statement "I'd do anything to lose weight" needs an adendum to the effect of "I'd do anything to lose weight that requires no effort, discipline or responsibility". We here at Cathe take extreme exception to anyone saying they'd rather be 'fat than bald' our beloved A-Jock is proof that fit and bald are absolutely beautiful!

Take Care
Laurie:)

DH and I were just talking about ppl taking the easy way out to lose weight this morning! I used to work with a girl that had gastric bypass 2 yrs this December (a month after I started WW). Talking with her before the surgery, she confessed to me that she lied about her wt loss attempts and fudged her weight charts just so her doctor would refer her to the surgeon. She even gained another 15 lbs the month before her surgery because she knew that she wasn't going to be able to eat like that again (fried chicken, cheese burgers, fries and onion rings EVERY night at work). Well, now she's a size 5 and by her own admission she, "looks good.....in clothes!"

I have lost 68 lbs the hard way, and want to lose another 25, and it's been very, very slow going. But, one thing I can say is, Cathe has helped me to look good......nekked, even at my weight now!!!

Anything to appease the "quick fix" society!

this made me think of a side effect ppl deal with b/c of the surgery. hanging skin from quick weight loss. being stretched out fo so long and then suddnely droppign the weight, the skin just doesn't bounce back like when doing it the slower way. and for you, on top of losing weight your are getting stronger,a fitness goal i always try to keep on top of the list.

congrats on those 68lbs!!!!!

Yep, that's usually what it seems to mean, doesn't it?
We used to have a secretary who would say that from time to time, but it always meant "I'll drink any shake or take any pills (even going to take Phen Fen right before it was pulled off the market) to lose weight, but there's no way I'll change my lifestyle!"

I saw a bit of that segment, and it is sickening. My DH takes Adderall for his MS, without it he could not function. Yes, a serious side effect is that he is thin now ( lost over 50 lbs ) and I cook like a madwoman so he can eat and try not to lose any more. I see people abusing a much needed medication for silly purposes that they could lose their health about and it makes me furious. My husband would give anything to regain his health, watching others taking it for granted in the name of vanity is disgusting.

I also have another friend that rants and raves about losing weight everytime we get together. She routinely says, "If I can just find a pill that will curb my appetite but not make my jaw hurt from clenching my teeth, I would be good, but the only thing that works for me is the highest does of phentermine." She has seen me change, but everytime it comes up, she rants, "if I only had the time to exercise".

It's something that you have to make time for!

Kassia- thanks!

"I'd do anything to lose weight"

Yeah, I get ticked off at this attitude, too. It reminds me of my cousin and her husband who refuse to quit smoking because they are afraid they'll gain weight-never mind that they have an asthmatic daughter!!

Such misplaced vanity...they'd probably look better with a few extra pounds than they do with the stained teeth and leathery skin (not to mention the way they smell like overflowing ashtrays!!!)that smoking gives them!!!!

No to mention the health problems!!! Let's see....Heart disease, athersclerosis, cancer, etc, etc, etc (just to name a few...)

the funny thing is that i actually lost weight when i quit smoking. WHY, b/c i was able to ride my bike for miles without getting out of breathe, most junk food just didn't taste good(once i quit i got those taste buds back)even though i still love my fried goodies and chocolate. yeah i didn't really know how bad smoke smell was until i quit, now it makes me and dh sick to smell it.

I had Weight Loss Surgery 20 years ago. I have lost a total of 190 pounds and kept it off for many years. I currently exercise 50-70 minutes a day and my eating is relatively clean.

Let me assure you that having yourself cut open, your insides altered in a way that forces you to change your lifestyle and dealing with people's moral disapproval is not the "easy way out." I acheived success with the help of my WLS and I worked hard to do it. I tried for years to lose weight "the right way" and I gained it back every time. There was nothing "easy" about my decision to have WLS, but it was the correct one for me, and by golly, it worked.

If you are interested in learning the FACTS about WLS, go to LivingAfterWLS.com, peruse the library of articles and visit the forums to meet some of the folks who have chosen this tool. It may help you to be supportive of the people in your life who have chosen or will choose this path.

I'm not flaming you! Your point of view is a common one, and I just thought you might find this information helpful. Have a nice day!

I, too, lost weight when I quit smoking, for the same reasons Kassia outlines. I took up mountain biking and was amazed at how much longer and harder I could ride as that smoke cleared out of my lungs...

I think what gets me most is what a sad, sad statement of our society this is. We are so focused on looks that health is not even considered. Not even the health of a child!! I think all we can do is go on doing what we do and when people ask us how we look so young and healthy, we tell them. And most important, allow our daughters and sons (boys have it as bad now) to see our habits and encourage them to follow our examples.

I saw this too and was equally disturbed. What was most shocking to me, however, was that for the woman on the "cocktail," the meds were being prescribed by a physician!! What kind of a physician would do this and think it was appropriate. Anything for a buck, I guess! Frightening.
