To purchase a barbell or not?

Hey...

I have been exercising for over 2 years now but I never used really heavy weights. The heaviest set of dumb bells I have is 10 pounds and I really only use them on occasion for leg work and back work. I know Cathe uses a barbell for a lot of things and alot of you gals have them too.

My question is, considering I don't lift heavy, is it just a silly waste of $$$ for me to get a barbell, or are there other reasons it's good to use as opposed to dumb bells??

After I have the baby, I *DO* intend to work on upping the poundage but as with anything, that will be a gradual increase that will take some time...

TIA!

I think that when you're ready to kick your workouts up to the next level, you will need the barbell. But, since I don't think you're intending to do that for a bit longer yet, I would say it's not an urgent purchase.

Are you intending to buy new workouts really soon, that have barbell weight work in them? If that's the case, then go buy it now! It does work your muscles a tad differently than using dumbells, although dumbells are always an adequate substitute for the non-barbell owner.

I really do not intend to make any major changes in my exercise routine until after I have the baby. I'm sure I will buy more work outs to build up selection and continue to try the new work outs I haven't done yet but so much is going to get modified more and more as time goes on that I think I'll just use dumb bells for now regardless of wether cathe is using a barbell. Maybe I'll ask for the barbell for my bday in April...or just go out and buy it for myself once I can resume my work outs post-delivery. In reading other threads here I am realizing just how inexpensive of a purchase a barbell can be. Initially I was afraid it would have to cost a lot of $$!

Thanks for the advice!

I only use my barbell to lift heavy, so if that isn't your case right now, you can certainly put it off. I never use it for light lifting. It's too much of a pain for me to keep adjusting the weights:)
