Okay, first I'm a diehard HP fan, cried when Dumbledore died, the whole bit. Love, love, love the books--just don't get me started on the movies. Anyway---deep breath here:

Did anybody read Keith Olbermann's prediction of the end of Book 7???
It's actually brilliant and I am seriously freaked that he's right!!
(I'll insert a "spoiler alert" here in case someone doesn't even want to read about his concept.):(

He's guessing that the scar on Harry's forehead is actually the 7th horcrux of Voldemort. Woah! As if that wasn't bad enough, in light of the prophecy, Olbermann predicts that Harry is about to kill himself to get rid of every trace of Voldy when Snape tells Harry that he can get rid of the horcrux/scar but only if Harry gives up his magical powers!!! Insert howls of anguish here...:eek:

God, I hope he's wrong. Even worse, suppose Rowling leaves it up in the air--doesn't tell us what Harry chooses?!? At least I'll have my answer in a 3-1/2 weeks. And, yes, I will buy my own copy of the book at midnight and probably read it all night long.

Oh my god, I feel like your post was written by my sister. You are too funny! When book 4 came out, I went with her to Borders at midnight and got the book with her--and yes, she read it the entire night!

I've read them all too and love them but I'm not as into them as you and my sister are. :) I'm going to email her your post and see what she thinks. I really hope it's not true! Thanks for the info!!

I didn't read your post because I seriously don't even want to contemplate what MIGHT happen. I am foaming at the mouth to be 100% SURPRISED. :) :) :) Just wanted to chime in and say I love HP!!!
 
OMG OMG OMG OMG... it's brilliant!!! Horrifying and sad, but brilliant! That would definitely fall in line with the whole prophecy - "neither can live while the other survives"

Hmmmm... this may be the best theory on Book 7 that I've heard so far. I'm not saying I like the outcome, but... well, I never expected Rowling to give us a happy ending.

And yes, I will be getting my copy of Book 7 at midnight too... and reading as long as I can stay awake. I.can.not.wait. *insert hyper emoticon here* :7 :7
 
I just saw this and I'll echo Emily's OMG OMG OMG OMG. That makes brilliantly AWFUL sense:( I've always suspected that Harry will die because of the prophecy, but this puts a new twist on things. Wow.
 
I really have to go back and reread all the books. I don't even remember what a horcrux thingie is. I better start now too, because I plan on reading 7 while on vacation in July.
 
Okay, I read this the other night and had a long discussion with DH about it (yeah, that might be a little sad;-) Or cool, think about it}( ---we're both English teachers and DH actually had a student who had this idea a YEAR ago--way to be upstaged by a 11th grader Olberman! JK). Anyhoo...while it's a very neat theory and it explains quite a few things, something about it just doesn't sit right with me. So I went back and reread the chapter on Horcruxes in HBP and while it fits SOME of the details, it doesn't fit all. Go back and take a look yourself pgs. 492-512. It was a pretty long and involved discussion, but it boiled down to a few key points:

1. If indeed Harry's scar (or Harry himself)is one of Voldemort's Horcruxes than it would imply that Voldemort has some sort of power over Harry---as he does over his other Horcruxes (Diary of Tom Riddle, ring that maims Dumbledore's hand [known Horcruxes], and Nagini [suspected Horcrux], as well as, perhaps, the locket---it might have done something to RAB---each Horcrux seems to be protected by potent dark magic). This would also imply that Voldemort has a level of control or power over Harry (or part of him)---as a Horcrux, that I'm not willing to accept. Even if this theory is correct, I think it's only partially correct, there would be more beyond what it predicts. Perhaps Harry will only have to give up the part of his magic that was transferred to him through Voldemort's attack, and will be left with his own magic, whatever special form or skill that might take. Or, rather than kill himself, or divest himself of the part of Voldemort he carries, far more deep and interesting would be Harry having to incorporate that part of Voldemort into himself, to accept it, and in doing so, somehow negate it or take away its power.

2. Voldemort has certainly done his damnedest to kill Harry on at least 3 occasions---(End of Sorcerer's Stone, Graveryard in GOF, and during the duel near the end of the attack on the ministry---he aims Avada Kedavra at him for goodness's sake!). Would Voldemort so easily and quickly sacrifice 1/7 of his soul? Especially in the end of SS where he is SO weak. Voldemort fears nothing more than he fears death, and the Horcruxes are what will keep him from that.

3. Perhaps the most important...J.K. Rowling has always managed to surprise me before and I have great faith in her ability to do so again. I'm not sure that I could guess the ending (even if I really wanted to, which I don't). Characters, spells, magical artifacts and creatures will be introduced that we don't know yet, and this could change things quite a bit.

There was more (for example, it seems such a solitary ending for a story arc that has focused on the power of togetherness versus the egotistical failing of evil needing to work alone, Dumbledore's insistence that the Prophecy need not ever come true---it only has power b/c Voldemort believes in it---there are many prophecies stored in the Hall of Prophecy that have never come true. I think the fact that it was destroyed physically in OoftheP is a powerful symbol.

Okay, this is getting seriously long :p But if anyone wants to talk about it some more, I for one, would love to:7

Mattea - you HAVE done a lot of thinking on this. Those are very good points, especially the part about Voldemort not wanting to destroy 1/2 of his own soul.

I think we can all agree that the end of this book is going to surprise the heck out of everyone. I bet JK Rowling never thought, lo those many years ago when she was trying to sell the first book, that Harry would so completely enrapture so many people. It's almost magical ;)

It was too hot to do much else, so we talked about this for LONG time;-)

And yeah, I don't think many authors sit and fanticize about parties surrounding the release of their books, largest production runs ever, blockbusters of every book in the series, hoopla, hype, and hullaboo about every little thing. Of course now they probably do, which is going to lead to some seriously depressed writers. :7

Wow, Mattea - all excellent points there. Of course Voldemort wouldn't want to kill part of his own soul... why didn't that occur to me? Doh!

I do agree that Rowling is going to blow us all away with something surprising - she's got more tricks up her sleeve than Albus Dumbledore. ;)
 
Emily-Thanks :) Did I mention I CAN'T WAIT!!!!! Oh, and if it makes anyone feel any better I DO NOT think that Harry will die. I just can't see her ending it that way. The whole time we've been building a life, a family, an amazing human being for/out of Harry, just to kill him? The very first words of the book (the first chapter title)= "The Boy Who Lived." Not to mention everyone who has sacrificed (in more than one way) so that Harry could live, and that would be such a waste. They didn't just do it b/c they thought Harry could kill Voldemort, but we're talking about people who truly loved Harry for Harry, his parents, Sirius, Dumbledore---so for them the ultimate point of seeing Harry live wouldn't be to defeat Voldemort, but just for him to live and be happy---himself. I don't see how that finishes the story in a satisfying way at all.

Well, it makes me feel better anyway:p

Hi all, I soooooo glad I'm not the only one who debates this sort of thing! Love the pros and cons of all the sides to this question.

Because I have zero will power, I bought Mugglenet.com's "What Will Happen in HP 7" at Borders yesterday because they wrote an entire chapter re: whether or not Harry is a horcrux. They argue that Voldemort may have inadvertantly created the scar/horcrux when he did the spell on baby Harry (remember, V. saves the creation of horcruxes for special murders) Since he didn't realize Harry was his horcrux, in books 1-5, V's goal is to kill Harry. BUT, at the end of OoTP, when V. temporarily possessed HP at the Ministry of Magic battle, he may have discovered HP was a horcrux. :eek: That could explain, why in book 6,Voldemort targets Dumbledore for killing, not Harry. :(

Oooh, they also think that Dumbledore was pleased when V. took some of HP's blood in GOF, because that meant he wouldn't be able to create any more horcruxes. I care way more than I should about this series!

OK, a little OT, but did anyone catch last weeks Simpson's episode? They did a spoof on Harry Potter books and Homer gets roped into reading to Lisa, and then he gets hooked and starts reading behind her back. When he gets to the end he's all distraught over the ending, so when he starts reading the last chapters to Lisa, he totally changes the ending so Lisa won't have any "psychological damage". Pure genius.
