Hi - I just read what you posted on the "heart palpitations" thread from a few days back. You mentioned that sometimes your heart would start to race. Can you be a little more specific? The reason I'm asking is because I had that happen once, several years ago. It only did 4 or 5 times (beats) maybe. But today, I had the "fluttery" or flip flop feeling for a few seconds then my heart also started racing. Normally I can cough and get the flutters to stop but it kept beating fast. It scared the he_ _ out of me so I got up and walked around for a minute and then it was gone. This also happened in public so I"m sure I looked crazy with my hand on my neck checking my pulse.

A little history: I was diagnosed with mital valave prolapse at 17 so I know about the palps. I also get PVC's I think which dr said were common (my dad gets them too). It was just new having the weird beats AND the racing together. I had an echocardiogram a few years ago and all was okay and I do Cathe or Turbo Jam regularly. In fact, I did KB this morning. I also read where another poster said hers were caused by too much sinus medication, which I also took this monring on an empty stomach. I know you're not a dr :) but I was a little relieved to see that I THINK you have experienced what I did today. And yes, history of panic attacks here too with Ativan on hand at all times.

Hi Kim,

Not Tneah here, but I thought I'd respond since I've experienced what you're describing. I have had occasional heart palpitations for years (typically only happens 2 or 3 times a year) and I think in my case it's stress-related or maybe low potassium. I sit down with a banana and a glass of water and I'm typically fine in a couple of minutes. But I agree it is a bit scary. I've also had an all-clear echo and my doc says my heart sounds normal. From some research I've done, heart palpitations can be worrisome, but are often harmless. I've included a link that provides some info you may find helpful.

Take care and good luck,

Thanks for the link. I'm confused though by it saying that heart palps can cause the sensation of racing heartbeats but then underneath that it said it could be tachycarida (very fast beats). That's what I'm concerned about..some kind of irregular rhythm.

Hi Kim,

The first time it happened, I felt my heart start racing, I got so lightheaded I thought I would pass out, I layed down on my office floor and hoped it would pass, it didn't, it was not just palpitations, it was full on racing, scared the crap outta me! It was a panic attack, something I had never experienced before. I went for about another year and then it happened again, I got prescribed Xanax in the mildest form to carry with me in case I feel one coming on.

My heart palpitations were different, I would feel my heart skip around for no reason, and of course it freaked me out. It wasn't a panic attack feeling though, and to be sure all was well, I just got through wearing a holster monitor. I get the results back next week, but didn't feel the palpitations while I wore it at all-of course!

What I have noticed I get super anxious the week before my period, my heart races, my pulse gets high, my blood pressure goes up, I get stressed during that time very easy. My intuition tells me its because of hormones, I am 41 and maybe in the peri-menopause deal-oh joy!So bottom line, I know now around my period I may experience heart palps, anxiousness and all that, but my heart is healthy as a teens so that is good news. And I know that I can get panic attacks seemingly out of nowhere, which is what the Xanax takes care of, thank goodness it hardly ever happens.

My DH has mitral valve prolapse too. He had those same symptoms as you so his cardiologist prescribed something called Atenol or something to that effect, it basically keeps everything beating properly so he doesn;t experience those episodes anymore thank goodness! I thought for awhile there we were both ready for the funny farm.:)
I would talk to your doctor about medication for your mitral valve issue, it sure helped my DH, you are not alone in this.
I know we are in great shape, so having these sort of things happen just don't make sense and can be scary!

But ask your gyno too about the hormone issue, I am convinced that is what causes my heart palpitations before my period (too much coffee during that time really pushes me over the edge), not sure how old you are, but as we get into our mid 30's and upwards;) I know that these things can happen and are quite common. Google peri-menopause and you will see one of the symptoms can be heart palpitations.

Well SUPPOSEDLY when I was dx'ed, they said my MVP was mild. Several years ago, when I saw the cardiologist, he said they couldn't even detect it and I didn't need to take abx before dental proedures anymore (I still did though :9 )

It's just that this racing really scared me. I didn't think it was going to stop and I didn't want to go to the ER. I don't know if a 1 point low T3 can be called hyperthyroid when the other numbers were fine. I don't see how anxiety caused it becasue I was feeling fine in that regard. Also, I don't really want to take meds for it. If they tell me it's related to the MVP and nothing bad will happen, I can deal with them. I've been taking more vitamins recently and wonder if that may have something to do with it. The flutters have been coming once a day for the past 3 or 4 days and then today, the racing with them.

I just had my FSH and LH checked and they were low but my gyn said understandably because I'm on the pill (I"m 35 btw). All "seems" normal in that area as well.

Crap, I know how frustrating and scary it is. But go back to your heart doctor and see what he says about your recent episodes!

I was afraid you'd say that. :(

If you've read my other posts, you'll know I have a 1 point low T3 level. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. This past year, I've been to the dr for back problems, some kind of illness in June that seemed cold/flu related, ear problems, and general blood work. NOW I have to go back and say I want another echo????? They already probably think I'm a nut! The good news is I can get it scheduled through the nurse who knows what a hypochondriac I am. I guess it's time to schedule. :(

Does your husband have any restrictions? Does he do Cathe workouts or others of his own? Thanks for all of your help.

Hey Kim! I also responded to the "heart palpitations" thread and thought I'd give you my 2 cents. I have MVP and I take Atenelol. It's like a blocker to help you not feel all of the crazy stuff that goes on in your chest. I also have Klonopin to help w/anxiety. Things that trigger my episodes are caffeine, chocolate, sometimes heavy weights and most definetly certain medicines.:-(

It's not funny but I couldn't help but laugh when u were talking about coughing to get ur heart to act right and walking around checking ur pulse n your neck! That's happened to me SOOO many times!!! It's not often my heart races (mine actually beats really slow) but I have friends that do and there's is caused my MVP.

You may need to go to the Dr. for peace of mind but just know ur not alone!!! And you also helped me, even though I've accepted my MVP and deal w/it, it's so comforting when u hear others going thru the same thing so thanks for ur post!

We can all look crazy or sometimes feel like we're losing our minds together!!!:7

Thanks for your post Lisa. It IS good to know I'm not alone. Today was really freaky. I really hesitate to take meds just to not help me feel what's happening because I know those types of meds can interfere with so many other meds. I take BCP and don't want to stop anytime soon, mainly because I'm experiencing a hair shed right now, hopefully temporary from some stuff that happened this past summer, and I can't take the chance that coming off the pill would trigger another shed. That's vain I know, but I can't help it. I want to keep my hair :) . Of course my gyn says the pill is safe after 35 as long as you don't smoke or have high BP. Compound all that with the possibility of thyroid meds and I just don't want anything else. I've known there are things I can take but if all it's going to do is keep me from having harmless palps, I'll just have to deal with them and know they're harmless.

I don't blame u, I like my hair too! I've acually never taken BCP's and now my tubes are tied but I totally understand u not wanting to take more med's. It's probably mental but I'm scared to get off the Atenelol for fear of freaking out when my heart freaks out! Anyway...hang on to your hair and best of luck w/the palps!!!:D

That is the medication my DH takes, the Atenelol. It works for him, sadly he does not work out, but his on his feet all day, pacing, so he isn't a total couch potato. Plus, his genetics are such that he gets asked all the time if he works out. But I worry, I do. He used to ride his bike 20 miles a day and lift, but now that we have our own company, the stress of work and various other things give him an excuse not to workout, he always says I work out enough for both of us.

Keep me updated on what your doctor says, I know this is frustrating and so scary, but yes, its nice to know we are not alone.

Thanks again....and I'm sure you do workout enough for him ;-)

I'm actually about to do GS Legs. I also have a sinus headache today but don't want to take the meds for it. I have the thyroid test tomorrow and Tuesday so we'll see. Maybe that's the cause and not the MVP. Have a GREAT day!!

Hey Tneah! My husband owns his own business and is always so stressed! He also use to work out, now he says he just doesn't
have time and if he does get home early he says he's too tired. I stay worried about him.:-( He talks about needing to lose weight and exercise but it just doesn't happen. But maybe both of them will decide to eventually!!!

Hey Kim! Wishing you the best on your Dr.'s appt.'s! Keep us posted!:7
