Those DREADED doctor's scales!!!!

:D I went to the Dr.'s the other day for an appointment and cringed at the thought of hopping on the scales. The Dr.'s scales read 10 lbs more than my scales. Arghh!! Talk about a let down!!! I have been going by my scales since January 3 and have lost 25 lbs. Hurray for me!!!:)

I had a very similar experience. Only my scales were 24, yes 24! pounds lower than the doctor's. That was what prompted me to destroy them with a sledgehammer! It happened a while back, and I've since lost that darned 24 pounds (AGAIN!), but it was close to two years before I bought another scale, and I invested in a good one this time. Talk about depressing, huh?

Just a bit of encouragement here, I have a friend who is an office manager for a medical group, and she told me not to feel too badly about the scales. While they are calibrated according to any State Code regulations, meaning once a year or whatever is required, they can be seriously off. She said to think about how many people climb on and off of them each day, every day, week in and week out, and you will soon see that the 'dreaded doctor's scale" is not necessarily the be all/end all for what you weigh. Nice to know huh :D !!

There are two scales in the office I go to (one in each hallway). They're not even in sync with each other!

Also, I think that we all might learn what the "sweet spot" is on our home scales (you know what I mean..the place where you can stand and by 5# lighter?), but we don't have enough familiarity with the doctor's scale to do that (and it's a different kind of scale, so may not have the same "sweet spot").

Kathryn, that's very funny!

Unfortunately, I have one of those "dreaded doctor's scales" & moving it around would be a workout in itself. I put it in my weight room & can strip down to nada for my weigh in first thing in the AM.

The other thing to remember with those office scales is that you have CLOTHES on. They add a few pounds.

I found out you do NOT have to weigh when you go to the doctor's. It's just part of their routine. But I have politely said, 'No, thank you' since 1996! No more dread!

I did have nasal surgery in June and had to be weighed so they could administer anesthesia. I told the nurse I didn't want to know the number and I was going to step on the scales backwards, she would weigh me, then move the counter weights back! I told her I have a very bad phobia about the scales. Well, she did it! My health has NOTHING to do with what the scales read.

Yes, I'm obsessive about it, but I have gotten fitter and way, way less depressed about my weight since I have made this decision.

:)

Blessings,
Kimberly

OMG!!!! I am soooo glad to see this post. :) I was just at the Drs and their scale read that I was 117lb. My scale reads 108-110. I was freaking out all day.

I've tried telling the nurse I didn't want to be weighed, but every time they tell me my insurance company requires the weight. So I don't look and ask her not to tell me what it is.

Aren't those doctor's scales supposed to be very accurate? I always thought they were. If they're not very accurate, then why don't they read lower than our actual weight? :D

Just stick a 5 pound weight on your scale to check it's accuracy.

Doctor's scales ALWAYS weigh me in at least 5 pounds heavier...if only I could drag my dumbell to the Dr.'s to check the scales accuracy...

Yes, I've checked my scale that way. And.....yes, I've also thought about lugging my 20 pound DB to the Dr.'s office to test the evil scale. x(

I've always just told the nurse what I weighed. I say, "I knew you'd be asking so I weighed myself this morning." I've never had a problem.

This is hilarious!!!! I had a physical on 8/1. I made the appointment in June so I was dreading the weigh in. I lost a few pounds between June and 8/1 and weighed myself on my Healthometer scale, which weighs to the half pound, so I could see the difference to the Doc's scale. Well, my scale was 1 1/2 pounds HIGHER than the doc's scale.
I had gyn app't the day before and their scale had the same weight as my doc's scale. I couldn't believe it - what a pleasant surprise.
I was testing my scale to see if it was time for a new one.

I use to set my scales up a few pounds to compensate for mistakes.

I always have anxiety about the doc appointment weigh in!!!!! Debra

The same thing happen to me. WW scale had me 10 lbs more than my scale at home. I freaked out as well. Then went out and purchased me a digital scale.

Kimberly...I'm proud of you, going to have to do this next doctor's visit. I too have this phobia of scales and get so intensely irritated with the doctor's scales. I've lugged all my weights upstairs to load them onto my scale to be sure it's correct and found that as I got up to 100 pounds it began to deviate, but I think I have it set where it should be finally.

And Kathryn....you've been peaking in my window in the morning watching me find that "sweet spot" on the scale, I didn't realize anyone actually knew that there was one. I've been known to balance with my feet side ways grip the edges just to see if I could cut a half a pound off, or balance on one foot at the upper quadrant of the scale as this seems to help.....think I should try THAT at the doctor's office next time? :p :p :p
