My morning Pilates mat classes are actually catching on at the gym!! I'm even beginning to enjoy teaching them myself. There are a handful of new members that do nothing but Pilates and walking and running. If you had asked me a few weeks ago would it be successful, I would have said no. I've got a group of about 8-10 people that have learned the exercises well enough that I don't have to spot them so much which leaves me free to help the newbies more.

How long before my ballerina body appears?

Does anyone, maybe Cinza, know of a message board similar to this but for Pilates rather than aerobics?

And another question. I've got a few ladies that want to adhere strictly to the Pilates guidelines for the time being. However, my training gave me no information on what ol' Joe wants you to eat. Did he recommend vegetarianism?

Thanks

hi, i am so glad to hear its working and you are enjoying it.

i dont know if you are serious or joking about the ballet body... but for anyone who really thinks they will do pilates and look like a dancer i would like to say:

i havent seen anyone transformed seriously on the outside by pilates... not without a lot of other exercise and diet
... BUT
many people tell you how it changed them from the inside out.

ballerinas get ballerina bodies is because they do ballet about 4-6 hours every day for years and years ....
and the ones who get to be professional get to be professional because are born to be long and lean in the first place ..... and even so dancers are notorious for eating disorders... the competition and pressure to look willowy gets them pretty bad.

My mom was a ballerina.....she was proud to weigh around 100 lbs when i was born....and she was 5'7" !!!!

RE: ballarina bodies from pilates?

Wow, she was willowy, and maybe aneorexic too? Peer pressure is a powerful thing, isn't it?

Do you know what Joseph Pilates recommends as far as a diet? I've got some ladies that think this is the "to-die-for" method to get them skinny? After all, it works for Madonna, doesn't it?

They keep asking me what I do . . . most of these particular ladies I'm talking about are new to the gym. They don't know that I'm a closet weight-lifter, stepper, kick-boxer and most everything else you can do to burn a calorie.

I wonder when it's appropriate to tell them that EXERCISING AIN'T EASY!

RE: ballarina bodies from pilates?

Gad! We would not want them to think that we SWEAT! How unladylike!;-) Actually, I don't think it's a fear of being unladylike, it's just plain laziness, IMO! There I said it! Not many people want to do what it takes to get and stay in good shape. It's hard work, and we all like to have our junk food.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-26-01 AT 11:58AM (Est)[p]i dont recall anything on diet and pilates..

there are some writings by pilates available... little books. .... you might do a search on borders and then you might find what he wrote and take a peek at a store without buying anything.

pilates definately is NOT the royal road to skinny...

I havent seen any ones body change in my pilates crew ... i imagine your ladies would benefit from what you know about the female fat cell, eating and exercise for calorie burning.

People i know just say they feel better and stronger ...
I got half an inch or more taller myself!!
I can sit up straight much easier and do other activities with more physical confidence....
but skinny?
no way!
got to get skinny the old fashioned way.

pilates teachers i know do weights and or teach dance to keep the rest of the body in shape....

have you seen the photos of Pilates when he was in his 80s? great shape! but he was a gymnist in the first place i think.

RE: ballarina bodies from pilates?

One of the gym members who attends my Pilates classes just called me. She has fibromyalgia (sp?) and says Pilates has been THE THING to help her.

Also, the even better news is that she is bringing 5 GUESTS with her tomorrow from her church's praise dance team just specifically to do the Pilates!!!!!!! I'm sooooooo excited!!!!

kim

i am very pleased you are getting good results..

pilates is very good stuff!! maybe not for looking like a dancer or getting skinny...but its very smart body wise.

good for you!

RE: kim

Hi, Kim. I did a search for Joseph Pilates on the net. I found no specific reference to diet; however, there's a book by J.P. at amazon.com which might help? Good luck!

RE: Hey Bobbi!

Hi, Debbie!

Oh, you'll see them here and there in the forums. I have been a little sad (sigh). My husband and I were watching tv last week, a home improvement show, and he commented how flat things can seem. The smiling host of a television show seems so glaringly at odds with some other images we've seen lately! I am such a sap sometimes!

Peace,
